Overview

Responsible for directing the oncology pharmacy operations at SCCA.  Assume the duties of the UW Medicine Chief Pharmacy Officer at SCCA in his absence.  Participate in performance improvement, patient safety, and educate staff about same.  Collaborate with nursing and medical staff on medication use system.  Act as a pharmacy resource to patients, medical staff, nursing staff and ancillary department personnel.

 

High degree of problem solving based on information obtained from staff and direct observation. This position determines own work methods, and schedules own work. Monitoring and direction of this position is minimal.

 

This managerial position has substantial responsibility for formulating institutional policy at the department level.

Responsibilities

A.         Management (30%) 

  • Lead in the planning, developing, organizing, operating, and improving the SCCA Inpatient and Ambulatory Clinic Oncology Pharmacy Services.
  • Provide leadership and direction for pharmaceutical care.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for staff safety consistent with the medical center-wide safety committee. Assist the UW Medicine Chief
  • Pharmacy Officer in short and long-term goals and objectives.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive policies and procedures manual.
  • Develop, facilitate, and maintain standards of pharmacy practice.
  • Encourage development of clinical and pharmacy practice research which would add to the current knowledge base.
  • Assume other responsibilities in the management of the pharmacy department as delegated.
  • Provide management and project reports as required

 

B.         Program and Financial Management (25%)

  • Maintain effective communication with the other persons on the administrative staff of the Department of Pharmacy and other medical center departments.
  • Develop and maintain the departmental budget, including personnel, operations, and capital equipment components.
  • Develop and maintain methods for monitoring expenditures and revenue.
  • Coordinate with Inter- and Intradepartmental Information Systems personnel on planning and operational activities related to pharmacy informatics, electronic records, and physician order entry systems.
  • Facilitate oversight of Revenue Cycle Management and Financial Services for pharmacy related matters.
  • Direct SCCA Oncology Pharmacy patient safety, quality assurance, and performance improvement initiatives and programs.
  • Liaison with regulatory agencies and accreditation entities.
  • Assure compliance with all pharmacy laws, regulations and accreditation standards
  • Coordinate with Pharmacy Compliance Officer for compliance and records management as required by regulatory agencies, the University, UW Medicine and the SCCA.
  • Develop and maintain systems to evaluate the efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity of departmental services.
  • Direct the recruitment, interviewing and evaluation of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns for SCCA pharmacies.
  • Develop and maintain a disaster plan consistent with the medical center-wide disaster plan.
  • Facilitate development and maintenance of an infection control plan consistent with the medical center-wide infection control policies and in conjunction with the infection control staff.
  • Coordinate development and maintenance of a risk management program.

 

C.         Personnel (25%)

  • Responsible for all matters relating to personnel, specifically but not limited to: recruitment, hiring, termination, salary determination, disciplinary and other personnel actions, interfacing with SCCA and UW Medicine HR Departments.
  • Responsible for preparation and maintenance of all records relating to payroll, specifically, but not limited to: processing of bi-monthly payroll, payroll certifications, schedules, leave records.
  • Direct oversight of personnel orientation, functional performance, staff development and retention of competent personnel.
  • Develop and maintain a system for current job descriptions and performance evaluations
  • Assure pharmacy staff development, new employee orientation, and ongoing training in coordination with management team members.
  • Assure documentation is current for licensed or certified personnel.

 

D.         Education (10%)

  • Maintain a continuing education or staff development program which meets the requirements for professional licensure and certification, and meets medical center or regulatory agency requirements.
  • Lecture for the School of Pharmacy in its undergraduate, graduate and/or continuing education programs.
  • Develop and maintain a training program for pharmacy interns.
  • Assist in coordination the experience of pharmacy residents, undergraduate and/or graduate pharmacy students at SCCA.

E.         Research (5%)

  • Participate in collaborative research with the Schools of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health.
  • Encourage participation in practice-oriented research.

 

F.         Other (5%)

  • Develop leadership role and participation in pharmacy organizations.
  • Encourage publication of research and articles in professional journals.
  • Promote an image of service and goodwill to the patients, public and medical center staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Pharmacy
  • Professional degree in PharmD
  • Certification: Washington State Pharmacist licensure and Pharmacist Preceptor licensure and/or eligible for Washington licensure
  • 4+ years of oncology pharmacy practice
  • ASHP-accredited residency preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in the area of ambulatory pharmacy practice
