Advanced Practice Provider: Palliative Care

 

Fred Hutch Cancer Center (FHCC) in Seattle, Washington, is nationally and internationally known for their patient care and research in cancer. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, along with the University of Washington, provides world class care in oncology/hematology, research and education. A FHCC ARNP/PA-C is a certified physician assistant or advanced registered nurse practitioner who provides evaluation and medical management of Palliative Care patients at FHCC. This job opening is specifically designed to recruit an ARNP/PA-C who will work at Fred Hutch South Lake Union Campus. All clinical responsibilities are performed within the scope of practice and institutional privileges of the assigned location, and under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer at FHCC. The ideal candidate will work 1.0 FTE.

• Perform patient and family initial palliative care consultations, including comprehensive assessment of pain and other symptoms
• Perform or facilitate follow-up visits for palliative care patients as appropriate to facilitate coordination and continuity of care
• Evaluates the physical and psychological state of the Palliative Care patient. Provides support to patients by participating in patient and/or family teaching, counseling and education as well as referring patients to other FHCC services and community agencies to promote optimal adjustment and functioning
• Provide services related to palliative care and end of life care 
• Prescribe medications including controlled substances to the extent delegated and licensed. Must maintain an active DEA license
• Collaborates and consults with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective, and timely treatment as well as continuity of care
• Communicates changes in patient’s health status or urgent patient issues to the patient’s primary oncology or hematology care team in a timely manner
• Documents patient care in accordance with FHCC & UWP policies
• Facilitate continuity of communication and coordination of care with FHCC, UWMC, and community providers as necessary
• Arrange and/or attend and actively participate in palliative care consultation meetings with attending and other palliative care staff in collaboration with treating medical team.
• Participate actively in palliative care service line activities, including but not limited to quality improvement projects, interdisciplinary team rounds, education

• Education of Fellows, Attendings, Advanced Practice Providers, nurses and other clinical staff regarding palliative care through informal and formal means (including supporting rotations on the PC service)
• Obtain ACLS certification within 6 months of hire and maintain this certification throughout employment. FHCC APPs may be required to participate as a rotating member of the clinic’s Rapid Response/Code Team.
• Teach and mentor new APP staff & PA and/or NP students
• Willingness and desire to participate in palliative care related research
• Desire to practice in an academic environment at a Comprehensive Cancer Center
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program required
• At least 1 year of experience or training as an APP in Palliative Care
• Experience caring for hematology and/or oncology patients is desired
• Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team is essential. Strong team player, willing to collaborate in caring for patients with multiple teams
• Washington state licensure required. DEA license at time of credentialing

• ACLS required within 6 months of hire
• Strong oral and written communication skills required

 

Preferred qualifications:

• Current certification in Palliative Care
• Trained in Vital Talk or Serious Illness Communication training
• Conducted or participated in palliative care research
• Graduated from a Palliative Care APP fellowship
• Experience with pain and symptom management for oncology patients
• Prior experience with EPIC preferred

The annual base salary range for this position is from $140,000 to $210,752, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
