The Fred Hutch Cancer Center has an excellent opportunity for a PHARMACY TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE. The Pharmacy Technician Apprentice is a student in training (Pharmacy Technician Trainee), mentored by Fred Hutch Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) staff, in preparation to take Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam leading to their Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) registration, obtained through the Washington State Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission (Pharmacy Commission). The Apprentice will participate in on-the-job training, learning to perform the duties of a Pharmacy Technician. Under direct supervision, the Apprentice will learn to assist pharmacy and health care professionals in the delivery of pharmacy services. The apprenticeship is designed to complete 264 hours of classroom and lab, and 2,000 hours of work experience over a period of 12-24 months. The Pharmacy Technician program is governed by the Health Care Apprenticeship Consortium's Pharmacy Technician Training Program Plan with the Pharmacy Commission and the HCAC Apprenticeship Program Standards with the State Apprenticeship Council.

 

The apprenticeship is designed to complete 264 hours of classroom and lab through North Seattle College (expect 6–10-hours of homework each week), and 2,000 hours of work experience over a period of 12-24 months.

Responsibilities

  • Provides good customer service to patients by being attentive and quick to respond at pharmacy window and follows through on problems
  • Runs specific areas of pharmacy operations including Point of Sale (POS), working independently as assigned, assists in maintaining pharmacy stock and ensures no expired medications are in the clinic, by following the inventory control process
  • Enters prescription orders into pharmacy system, including billing prescriptions appropriately and accurately
  • Prepares, packages, and labels medication in an accurate and efficient manner
  • Charging and billing functions
  • Operates CII safe and follows all controlled substance procedures
  • Filling and documentation of pyxis, emergency/code boxes and code trays
  • Monitors stock for expiration dates and removes outdates
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Delivery of patient specific medications to infusion or other areas of the clinic
  • Uses proper aseptic technique in preparing pharmacy products accurately and efficiently during IV admixture
  • Other pharmacy related duties in accordance with regulations under Washing State Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Must obtain WA State Pharmacy Assistant License within 30 days of hire;
  • Must enroll in Pharmacy Technician training program at North Seattle College within reasonable time after hire;
  • Must Pass National Exam for Certified Pharmacy Technician within 90 days of completing academic program at North Seattle College.
  • During program must become familiar with the generic names of drugs along with their basic indication
  • Able to perform basic pharmaceutical calculations
  • Ability to use a mouse, navigate computer programs, enter data into computer systems in accurately and efficiently
  • Ability to communicate verbally in person, on the phone, and in writing in a clear, concise, and professional manner
  • Able to maintain patient confidentiality

Pre Employment Drug Screening:
 
As a condition of employment Fred Hutch conducts pre-employment drug testing for this pharmacy role. All offers of employment in the pharmacy department are conditional on the applicant successfully completing and passing a drug test in accordance with the Fred Hutch policy.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $27.01 to $38.45 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.  

Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
