The Koch Lab in the Basic Sciences Division is seeking a reliable part-time lab aide to perform routine mouse husbandry and laboratory maintenance tasks. This is an ideal position for a student interested in gaining laboratory experience while maintaining the flexibility to dedicate time to coursework.

 

The time commitment will range from 2 to 6 hours per day, 2-4 days per week, and will not exceed 18 hours per week. The position will be continuous throughout the school year including summer quarter. The individual in this position must be willing to handle and perform procedures on mice. A commitment of at least one year is expected.

This is a work-study opening. Work-study is a college / university program that enables part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, affording them assistance with educational expenses. Applicants eligible to apply need to have the following:

  • Currently on or will be eligible for off-campus work-study during the upcoming academic school year.

You will be required to submit Financial Aid documentation confirming work study eligibility for off-campus work prior to interview.

 

Responsibilities

  • Weaning, tagging, and cataloging litters of mice.
  • Maintaining accurate records of mouse IDs, strain information, and genotypes.
  • Stocking lab supplies, preparing reagents, disposing of biohazardous waste.
  • General lab cleaning and organization.
  • Collecting and processing blood samples for flow cytometry.
  • Assisting other lab members with experiments.
  • Humane euthanasia of mice.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; OR,
  • High school senior with lab-based experience or demonstrated interest in the sciences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Enrollment in an undergraduate institution, preferably as a freshman or sophomore in the biological sciences (e.g. biology, immunology, or microbiology).
  • Previous or current laboratory experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with animals is desirable.
  • Attention to detail and accurate record-keeping skills.
  • Manual dexterity and the ability to lift and carry mouse cages and 2-liter bottles of water is necessary for this position.
  • Basic computer skills and comfort with learning new software systems.
  • Strong attention to detail required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication required.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $21.30 to $30.13 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

 

Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
