Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The Thomas lab in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division is seeking a Director of Scientific Research.

 

The primary role of this individual will be to manage the scientific portfolio of the lab. Administrative functions, including grant reports and interactions with funding agencies, will be required. Mentoring junior members and trainees of the lab, including supporting experimental design, troubleshooting problems, and helping in the preparation of manuscripts will also be core activities. The ability to manage and direct a research program as part of the overall efforts of the Thomas lab will be the core focus of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee scientific project design and collaborations within and outside of Fred Hutch.
  • Lead human cohort efforts (logistics, IRB, study design, sample selection, etc.).
  • Provide mentorship and training.
  • Maintain scientific and administrative efforts for the DIVINCI consortium.
  • Interact with Laboratory Operations Manager to ensure seamless processes in the lab.
  • Within the DIVINCI consortium, maintain a monthly DIVINCI investigators calls to discuss ongoing projects.
  • Serve as an essential point of contact on scientific progress and future plans for the program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD with 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proven performance in a comparable role.
  • Experience in managing complex research programs, cellular and molecular biology techniques, human cohort design and management, High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) library preparation protocol development and optimization, molecular cloning, and mammalian tissue culture.
  • Driven individual capable of creative independent research, as demonstrated by first author publication(s) and presentations, exceptional multi-tasking and project management skills.
  • Superior written communication skills, as demonstrated by successful applications for external funding.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with relevant lab protocols.
  • Prior experience in molecular biology/genomics/cancer biology/high-throughput sequencing.
  • Well organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in immune repertoire sequencing.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $94,037 to $212,035, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
