The Thomas lab in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division is seeking a Staff Scientist to direct its efforts in understanding the determinants of immune specificity. 

 

The Staff Scientist will work independently toward research goals under the direction and guidance of the PI. In this role, the incumbent will manage junior scientists and trainees by assisting in the development of their research projects, troubleshooting problems, and helping prepare manuscripts. Primary experimental research and computational analysis, including algorithm development, will be integrated throughout the program. Managing collaborations with other research programs within and outside of the lab will be necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct an independent research project and, when necessary, contribute to and support research performed by other lab members
  • Present ongoing research in multi-group lab meetings
  • Communicate data to the lab in written reports and participate in manuscript and grant writing when applicable
  • Train new lab members in standard lab techniques
  • Communicate with other research groups to maintain multi-group meeting schedules
  • Monitor lab safety and liaise with appropriate administrative departments
  • Monitor shared lab equipment and resolve technical issues when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in biology and at least 3 years professional experience in a relevant field
  • Extensive experience with molecular biology techniques, including molecular cloning
  • Extensive experience with tissue culture and generation of stable cell lines
  • Experience with and understanding of the principles of fluorescent microscopy and image acquisition
  • Experience with standard cell biology techniques, including western blotting, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence
  • Experience in experimental and computational analyses of immune receptor repertoires, including High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) library preparation protocol development and optimization, molecular cloning, and mammalian tissue culture
  • Driven individual capable of creative independent research, as demonstrated by first author publication(s) and presentations, exceptional multi-tasking and project management skills
  • Superior written communication skills, as demonstrated by successful applications for external funding

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive experience training students and/or technicians in standard laboratory techniques
  • Background in immune responses to infectious diseases

The annual base salary range for this position is from $82,118 to $185,016, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
