Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research (HICOR) is a multi-disciplinary research institute whose mission is to reduce the human and economic burden of cancer. HICOR faculty conduct research in comparative effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, quality of care, health care delivery, health outcomes, and health policy, with an eye towards supporting public and private decision making to maximize health value under resource constraints.

 

The Research Administrator (RA) works to ensure efficient and effective administration of HICOR operations in support of the scientific portfolio. The RA proactively provides compliant and effective funding, budget, and regulatory management as well as business process administration for the Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research (HICOR). This administrative position reports directly to the Program Operations Director and will liaise with other departments to support Principal Investigators and senior staff. The RA will participate in program operations at a high level and monitor multiple internally and externally funded budgets.

 

The RA works in an autonomous manner to complete non-scientific funding proposal content and tasks, exercises independent judgment to make appropriate decisions, is possessed of the ability to multitask without loss of accuracy or efficiency, and works under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The RA shows leadership in anticipating needs, clearing obstacles, and identifying and taking ownership of projects that need to be completed.

Responsibilities

Application Pre-Award

  • Work closely with Principle Investigators to prepare and submit grant and contract applications to funding agencies, ensuring all forms are completed correctly and on time
  • Assist HICOR as it navigates the grant proposal process. Understand all parts of the application submission process and the different requirements of various funding sources.  Interpret Notices of Funding Opportunities and sponsor guidance documents, create and communicate timelines, complete non-technical/non-scientific portions of the submissions, and oversee institutional sign-off.
  • With input from Investigators and senior staff, develop budget and related financial portions of applications including outside collaborations.

Application Post-Award

  • Responsibility for post award oversight by reviewing and interpreting notices of award and contracts
  • Work with Principal Investigators and project managers to prepare budget forecasts
  • Maintain internal documentation
  • Work directly with Fred Hutch Office of Sponsored Research staff to resolve questions and issues related to grants and contracts, including closeout, cost transfers, and prior approval requests
  • Initiate, review, and monitor subawards/subcontracts for spending and compliance
  • Assist with expense approval and invoice processing assuring that charges are appropriate and paid in a timely manner
  • Interim/Progress Report administration
  • Follow quick-to-change policies and procedures of the NIH and other funding agencies and respond accordingly to maintain compliance

Leadership/Administration

  • Maintain departmental database
  • Represent HICOR on Center and Divisional committees as appropriate
  • Participate as an active contributor in meetings
  • Assist in the training and development of staff

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or the equivalent required. Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two years of experience in research administration preferably with principal investigators/academics.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office/Adobe
  • Efficiently planning, organizing, and prioritizing your work as well as that of others
  • Ability to tailor communications to specific audiences
  • Ability to navigate complex internal systems and departments
  • Basic budgetary knowledge (ability to reconcile, manage, report budget information, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and budgetary knowledge. 
  • Requires ability to work independently and take initiative in a dynamic environment.
  • Must exhibit excellent dependability and flexibility in dealing with changing priorities.
  • Strategic thinker, excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, creative problem-solving, and comfortability with competing priorities.
  • Must be able to produce high-quality work under pressure and maintain a professional, positive approach.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree
  • Prior experience working in start-up or quick-growth environment.
  • Prior experience as a research administrator preferably with principal investigators/academics

The hourly pay range for this position is from $32.77 to $49.14 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
