The Industrial Hygienist administers a comprehensive program to identify, monitor, evaluate, communicate and control occupational hazards at Fred Hutch.  The incumbent reports to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety and works independently in directing industrial hygiene projects and activities according to established policies, procedures, and regulations.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Serves as Chemical Hygiene Officer for organization.
  • Design and oversee industrial hygiene projects.  Manage consultants and vendors who provide industrial hygiene and related services.
  • Develop industrial hygiene policies and procedures in accordance with appropriate rules and regulations.
  • Develop and present safety training, and monitor for effectiveness.
  • Perform Industrial hygiene sampling to identify, quantify, and mitigate employee exposures to occupational hazards.
  • Consult with employees regarding recognized and potential occupational exposures and investigate occupational accidents and illnesses as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain the carcinogen use program including reviewing and approving Memorandum of Understanding and Agreement for chemical carcinogens used in research at Fred Hutch.
  • Conduct safety inspections of research laboratories, create reports of findings, engage with labs to improve safety.
  • Provide industrial hygiene updates and reports to committees and leaders as necessary.
  • Monitor industrial hygiene expenditures for cost control and budget conformity and assist director in budget development and justification.
  • Maintain all industrial hygiene program records.
  • Maintain all industrial hygiene monitoring equipment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of new and existing safety regulations relating to industrial hygiene and ensure compliance.
  • Serve  on the Fred Hutch Haz-Mat Spill Response team.
  • Perform Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Assist in selection of appropriate PPE based on Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Support safety programs for the Facilities Engineering department including confined spaces and fall protection.
  • Supervision of Environmental Health & Safety Specialist.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, public health, chemistry, or closely related scientific field, or equivalent experience.
  • Five or more years of professional experience as an Industrial Hygienist, preferably in a research laboratory and/or healthcare setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in industrial hygiene, public health, chemistry, or closely related scientific field. 
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation.
  • Supervisory experience.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $97,552 to $154,149, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

 

This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.
