Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The Fred Hutch Office of Education & Training (OET) houses educational and professional development programs for high school students, undergraduates, postbaccalaureate scholars, graduate students, postdoctoral and medical fellows, and faculty. Our programs span the biomedical disciplines and research interests pursued at Fred Hutch with a commitment to increasing access and creating pathways for those trainees historically excluded.

 

The Database Manager supports OET by designing, managing, and optimizing scalable database systems that streamline educational and operational workflows. This role plays a key part in centralizing data systems across multiple programs, enhancing data integrity, and supporting organizational decision-making through automation and user-centered design. This position reports to the OET Assistant Director, and requires a detail-oriented, problem-solving, and customer service approach.

Responsibilities

Database Development & Management

  • Design, build, and maintain Airtable databases to support the needs of 25+ education programs.
  • Implement relational data structures and field-level validations to ensure clean, consistent data capture.
  • Maintain system documentation and data dictionaries.
  • Identify opportunities to automate routine processes (e.g., application reviews, payment tracking, trainee progress monitoring).
  • Design, implement, and maintain automated workflows within Airtable using Airtable Automations, Zapier, and other integrated platforms.
  • Support seamless integration of third-party tools such as Jotform and DocuPilot to facilitate processes like PDF generation, conditional email notifications, and multi-step approval workflows across systems.

User Training & Support

  • Onboard and train new users across OET and affiliated departments.
  • Create instructional materials, including tutorial videos and user guides.
  • Provide troubleshooting and ongoing technical support to program managers and staff.

Data Governance, Quality Control, and Team Oversight

  • Implement best practices in data privacy, security, and access control.
  • Design and maintain quality control (QC) views and validation checks for payment, tuition, mentorship, and survey data.
  • Administer user roles and permissions across the enterprise Airtable instance.
  • Collaborate with IT and security teams to support enterprise-level compliance.
  • Supervise a Data Coordinator and provide direction and quality assurance for contractor-led technical projects (e.g., custom scripts, integrations, or system enhancements).

Reporting & Evaluation

  • Support program reporting needs through custom views, dashboards, and data exports.
  • Create data visualizations to support internal reviews and external communications.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure systems align with programmatic goals and evaluation metrics.
  • Facilitate data pulls and quality assurance checks for reporting.

 Other

  • Manage relationships with third party vendors, including processing contracts and payments.
  • Coordinate logistics and communications for stakeholders of training data projects and program applications.
  • Assist with organizing online materials and other resources for staff.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in computer science or related field.
  • Minimum of six years of high-level programming experience.
  • Minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree (MA/MS) in computer science or related field.
  • Project management experience or certification.
  • Airtable Builder Certification.
  • Extensive hands-on experience working with relational databases, with special emphasis on Airtable, including advanced features (linked records, views, formulas, forms, synced tables).
  • Strong JavaScript skills for scripting within Airtable automations.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, Python, and JavaScript.
  • Demonstrated experience building complex workflows using tools like Zapier or Make.
  • Experience implementing large-scale integrations across multiple systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with data management tools and general database literacy.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders and managing competing priorities.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau.
  • Experience with both Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $97,552 to $154,149, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.  

 

This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.

This position may be eligible for sign on bonus.
