The McElrath and Cohn Labs in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division are seeking a highly motivated Senior Bioinformatician who will be responsible for programming scripts for data processing, alignment generation, phylogenetic analyses, error checks and data uploads to server, as well as for performing alignment reviews. 

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and update software pipelines to assist genetic sequence analyses using all current sequencing platforms, with special emphasis on the PacBio and Illumina platforms. Respond promptly and provide expert assistance to internal and external customers.
  • Develop, maintain and update laboratory offline and web-based databases/tools to fit data analysis requirements using programming languages such as Python, Perl, SQL, HTML, JavaScript and R, as well as various Bioinformatics software packages.
  • Perform testing, troubleshooting, and debugging of application throughout the development process.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation.
  • Provide general computational support to internal and external research groups.
  • Implement, evaluate and maintain Bioinformatics software applications.
  • Manage and maintain laboratory computational servers.
  • Manage sequence datasets, perform sequence alignments, data curation, quality assurance, downstream analyses and GenBank submissions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • MS or PhD in bioinformatics, information systems, computational biology, genetics, or related field, or equivalent combination of degree and experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years professional experience including demonstrated experience with analysis of complex sequence-based data sets.
  • Strong record of contribution to publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Solid grounding in molecular biology, genetics, and statistical methods.
  • Demonstrated fluency in R or Python, ideally both
  • Proficiency with Linux/Unix shell scripting (e.g., bash)
  • Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to independently drive and prioritize multiple competing engagements with researchers that may span several months.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $112,924.00 to $178,464.00, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
