The Clinical Research Technologist II performs a variety of molecular tests related to diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment follow-up of disease, or uses similar techniques to monitor study participants.  Involves operating analytical instruments; recovering, compiling and verifying the accuracy of clinical data; performing calculations; preparing charts, graphs and summaries.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Works under the direction of the Principle Investigator or higher-level laboratory personnel.  Uses judgment and discretion in carrying out procedures.

 

JOB DUTIES

 

Performs the duties of the Clinical Technologist I position plus:

  • Handles biohazardous material, including bone marrow aspirate and blood. Performs and provides broad support for white blood cell separation, nucleic acid extractions, PCR amplification, and high-throughput sequencing assays on DNA and RNA libraries in accordance with standard laboratory processes and procedures.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Completes tasks as assigned (e.g. routine clinical or research sample processing, validations, reagent QC runs, or special projects) accurately and following strict methodologies.
  • Ensures compliance with lab regulatory agencies (FDA, CAP, NYS-DOH, CLIA).
  • Keeps accurate and detailed records for all workflows following Good Documentation Practices.
  • Exhibit clear and effective communication to facilitate effective handoff procedures.
  • Participates in planning strategies for increasing accuracy, effectiveness and/or scope of laboratory procedures.
  • Provides guidance and training to others in the performance of standardized laboratory procedures.
  • Attends meetings, seminars and workshops as appropriate. 
  • Reviews and updates SOP’s as needed.
  • Maintain continuing education credit requirements.
  • Record nonconformances for all appropriate errors. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s or higher in medical technology or laboratory science, chemical science, or biological science from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience and/or training in a clinical laboratory.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience from a laboratory holding a CLIA Certificate of Compliance/Accreditation meeting the definition of “high-complexity.”   
  • MB(ASCP) certification.
  • Molecular biology skills (e.g. DNA Extraction, Purification, PCR, qPCR, next-generation DNA sequencing) and related technical knowledge.
  • Experience working with human specimens (e.g. blood, tissues and/or cells) and biohazardous material.
  • Self-motivated and can work independently, with minimal supervision, while also working as part of a team environment in a dynamic organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and spoken.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $26.99 to $38.43 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
