The Brown Research Group within the Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and Epidemiology (BBE) program in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division (VIDD) at Fred Hutch is actively seeking a highly motivated Senior Staff Scientist to serve in the role of Director of Statistical Science. The successful candidate will hold a keen interest in infectious disease research, biostatistics, and epidemiology and will lead ongoing clinical trials conducted in collaboration with the research group, including infectious disease studies conducted by the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Consortium (IDCRC) and HIV prevention trials conducted by the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN). The Director of Statistical Science will work under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Brown and collaborate with other researchers at Fred Hutch as well as external scientists, with the possibility of developing their own portfolio. This role will play an integral part in the leadership of the HPTN SDMC and the IDCRC SDSU ensuring that statistical analysis and reporting meets the standards of the individual networks.

PRIMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• The Director of Statistical Science (DSS) will contribute to the IDCRC and HPTN research agenda through independent and collaborative research. The DSS may serve as Principal Investigator on research projects as appropriate.
• The Director of Statistical Science is expected to hold the rank of Senior Staff Scientist in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division (VIDD) and adhere to the Center Academic Policies for Faculty and Scientific Staff and VIDD Guidelines for Appointments, Reviews and Promotions.
• Ensure rigorous statistical analysis and reporting across all HPTN SDMC studies by developing analysis and reporting standards, collaborating with the SCHARP Director and DAU Manager to provide work direction to the HPTN SRA Manager and mentoring early career protocol statisticians.
• Lead the development of clinical trial and other study designs, including writing protocols and statistical analysis plans.
• Utilize data from completed trials and studies to lead analyses and publications based on individual research interests and as needed for collaborative projects.
• Supervise masters-level biostatisticians and trainees (Research Associates, Post-Docs, and Graduate Students) across the program.
• Lead the design and implementation of advanced statistical and epidemiological methods in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
• Communicate research findings through presentations at conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
• Maintain current knowledge of and contribute to advancements in the Infectious Diseases research field through participation in professional organizations, scientific conferences, reading industry journals, and publication of manuscripts.
• Responsible for consistently exemplifying Fred Hutch values and commitment to maintaining an inclusive workplace culture built on respect, diversity, equity, and research integrity.
• Assist in grant writing and reporting.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY 

• Level of autonomy: Independent work with limited oversight via regular check ins (i.e. weekly or semi-monthly as needed).
  • The DSS will contribute to the program research agenda(s) through independent and collaborative research resulting in presentations and publication.
  • The DSS will contribute to the implementation of strategic decisions of the program and evaluation performance.
  • The DSS will provide day-to-day management decisions regarding the research supported by the grant(s) and support the research agenda, as appropriate, escalating issues to the PI when needed.
• Financial responsibility: Budgetary oversight as principal investigator on grants.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• PhD. in biostatistics, applied statistics or related field.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in statistical leadership of clinical trials.
• Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience or equivalent experience leading and directing teams.
• Demonstrated background in statistical methods and data analysis.
• Demonstrated experience engaging with senior level government officials and scientific leadership.
• Demonstrated statistical leadership in collaborative multidisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated mentorship of trainees.
• Author of scientific publications in high-impact journals.
• Strong oral and written communication and critical thinking skills.
• Dedication to open and reproducible research.
• High scientific rigor and integrity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience working in complex and geographically diverse collaborative groups within a clinical research environment.
• Prior knowledge of immunology, infectious diseases (e.g., polio, TB, HIV, etc.), or vaccine research.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $94,033 to $212,030 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
