Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The Chief Data Officer of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Jeff Leek, established the Fred Hutch Data Science Lab (DaSL) to develop and support the overall data strategy for the organization. The mission of the Data Science Lab to ensure an effective data ecosystem at Fred Hutch by developing a modern, well documented, well implemented, overall data strategy. This should serve the needs and capabilities of those leveraging data at Fred Hutch regardless of “where they live” from the clinic to the research groups. The Technical Project Manager is responsible for managing and driving technical teamwork for the Data Science Lab Technical Team, in alignment with the Data Science Lab technical team product priorities. This position will act as Scrum Master, supporting the breakdown of work into tasks and stories, working with the team to set estimates, facilitate necessary scrum ceremonies, and align with product managers for priorities within the technical work. This position reports to the Data Product Management Team Lead and works closely with the technical team and product managers to drive product features to delivery. 

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the execution and adoption of Scrum ceremonies (e.g., sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily standups, retrospectives, and reviews/demos. 
  • Support and coach the technical team through agile and scrum practices. 
  • Eliminates impediments for the team by engaging the right stakeholders within the organization. 
  • Support the product managers in their efforts to manage the backlog and guide the team while facilitating a health team dynamic with respect to priorities and scope. 
  • Work with product managers to develop and present sprint level reports (e.g., burnups, cumulative flows, velocity charts) to analyze and assess team capacity and resourcing. 
  • Ensure work implemented by teams adhere to the steps and procedures as outlined within the definition of done (DoD) framework. 
  • Document project work, participating in story/epic development, and ensuring current and well-maintained documentation.  
  • Works across departmental groups to manage work on feature development for cross-institutional products and projects.  
  • Coaches and mentors technical project managers about agile project management. 
  • Works with multiple stakeholders across the institution to ensure sprint reviews are effective. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field. 
  • Minimum of 5 years IT project management experience. 
  • Experience with project management tools, methodologies, and best practices. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience managing multiple projects for the full life cycle utilizing a project management methodology. 
  • Scrum Master Certification. 
  • Experience working in a fast-paced dynamic environment with high degrees of ambiguity to deliver large and complex data projects. 
  • Experience managing more than one Scrum team.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $104,416 to $165,006, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
