Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With minimal supervision, the Software Development Engineer III role is to provide custom software solutions where no optimal solutions exist to support the mission of Fred Hutch. In this role, you will work in a small team of software engineers, collaborating with product owners, designers, and others. The team is responsible for developing, extending, and maintaining applications to support research administration needs and improve clinical lab processes. The Software Development Engineer III will join a larger, talented team of software engineers within the Solutions, Engineering and Architecture team (SEA), a part of Fred Hutch IT.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Collaboration: Work in an Agile environment alongside software engineers, product owners, designers, business analysts, and customers. Translate business needs into technical requirements.
  • Scrum Ceremonies: Participate in daily stand-ups, retrospectives, sprint planning, and refinement/design sessions.
  • System Design and Deployment: Design, develop, deploy, and maintain secure, efficient, and scalable distributed systems, ETLs, and components.
  • DevOps: Configure containerized build and deployment pipelines for testing and production environments, both on-premises and in the cloud.
  • Code Quality: Ensure code quality through code reviews, unit tests, and integration tests. Continuously improve the testability and stability of applications.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership in developing new applications and maintaining legacy solutions by promoting best practices and standards. Emphasize building maintainable and secure software. Coach/mentor junior developers.
  • Communication: Design and deliver formal and informal presentations on a variety of technical topics. Create and maintain documentation.
  • Support: Provide Tier 2 Support of software (limited after hours may be required)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering or related field desired or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years professional software development experience
  • Expertise with modern programming paradigms in a language such as Java, C#, Python or JavaScript. Preferably .NET
  • Understanding of containerization using Docker
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, preferably using GitLab.
  • Relational database design and development, preferably SQL Server with ORM experience
  • Solid understanding of software testing methodologies. Ability to write test plans that include both manual and automated testing.
  • Proven track record of delivering on multiple complex projects through all stages of the development lifecycle; design through deployment and ongoing support
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in a software engineering environment driving operational excellence and best practices.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • UI development experience using JavaScript, preferably knowledge of TypeScript
  • Experience maintaining and modernizing legacy applications
  • Experience writing and integrating with APIs
  • Linux and AWS experience
  • Experience in a healthcare or medical research environment and experience applying best practices to protect PHI/PII

The annual base salary range for this position is from $109,637 to $173,264, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
