Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. These values are grounded in and expressed through the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an anti-racist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, anti-racism and inclusion.

The Paulovich Lab at Fred Hutch (https://research.fredhutch.org/paulovich/en.html) is an interdisciplinary team whose mission is to develop and implement tools for protein quantification to enable precision medicine via patient selection and characterization of novel therapeutic targets. The lab has a major focus on mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics (both untargeted and targeted, multiple reaction monitoring), as well as integrating proteomic data with genomic data. Our group is highly collaborative, participating in national and international consortia in which teams of scientists, statisticians, and clinicians work together to solve clinical or biological problems to impact human health.

This is a terrific opportunity within the Paulovich lab for a highly motivated full-time Research Technician to join our translational proteomics team to help drive translational projects forward towards clinical applications by performing bench-level experiments in support of proteomic, genomic, and transcriptomic analyses of clinical and preclinical biospecimens. The ideal candidate will be able to work as part of a team as well as independently to follow established standard operating protocols (SOP) in a CLIA/CAP laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform molecular biology and biochemistry experiments on human and animal biospecimens and cell lines
  • Perform tissue culture experiments and maintain cultures and reagents in a sterile environment
  • Work with antibodies (immunoaffinity purification, immobilization on solid supports, perform ELISA to screen hybridomas)
  • Assist in generation of mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomic data
  • Process proteomic samples for LC-MS analysis (e.g., protein extraction, fractionation, immuno-depletion, trypsin digestion, alkylation, reduction, etc.)
  • Follow standard operating protocols (SOP) in a CLIA/CAP laboratory environment including participating in annual competency and proficiency testing
  • Collaborate effectively with an interdisciplinary team spanning expertise in medicine, biology, analytical chemistry, and statistics
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, records, research results files, and databases
  • Assist with written progress reports and development of standard operating protocols (SOPs)
  • Assist with writing scientific manuscripts (in peer-reviewed journals)
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR RESEARCH TECHNICIAN II:

  • B.S. degree and minimum 2+ years post-degree bench experience in Protein Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related discipline. Salary and title based on experience.
  • The work is rigorously quantitative, and exquisite attention to detail and the ability to adhere to standard operating protocols (SOP) and maintain records is critical.
  • The position includes drafting reports and parts of manuscripts for publication, as well as presenting experimental results to the research team and collaborators. Thus, excellent English writing and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Access)
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently in a highly interactive team environment
  • Must be comfortable in a milestone-driven environment, with quarterly objectives
  • Willingness to learn new techniques
  • Passion for translating biology into clinical solutions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR RESEARCH TECHNICIAN III:

  • Senior level position requiring extensive experience in a laboratory.  Generally, the incumbent will possess a Master's degree in a related scientific field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous tissue culture experience and sterile technique
  • Previous experience in a CLIA/CAP or similar clinical lab environment
  • Previous work in proteomics, genomics, and functional biology

A statement describing your commitment and contributions toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your career or that will be made through your work at Fred Hutch is requested of all finalists.
