Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

Summary:

The Cloud Engineering (CLD) team within Fred Hutch’s IT organization is responsible for architecting, implementing, and maintaining scalable cloud services for scientific and administrative groups.

 

The IT Cloud Engineer I will work with customers to understand their needs and translate those needs into business requirements. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, automation, deployment and support of solutions built in AWS, Azure, and GCP. The right candidate will have a strong appetite for learning and a desire to exercise creativity in an IT setting, as well as a strong knowledge of cloud computing fundamentals. The Cloud Engineer I will report to the IT Cloud Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Work with stakeholders to establish requirements for data projects and propose scalable solutions in a multi-cloud environment.
  • Implement scalable, secure, and resilient solutions in a multi-cloud environment.
  • Support project tasks, documentation, and customer communication for assigned work.
  • Support Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform, Ansible or other like programs in partnership with senior Cloud Engineers.
  • Participate in the DevOps cycle, utilizing CI/CD best practices to make changes to production environments (tools may include Gitlab, GitHub, or other)
  • Support automation of common tasks using scripting languages such as Python, Bash, and PowerShell in partnership with senior Cloud Engineers.
  • Support implementation of logging and monitoring solutions in partnership with senior Cloud Engineers.
  • Perform operational tasks, including but not limited to onboarding/offboarding of customers and role creation, and permissions management in partnership with senior Cloud Engineers.
  • Cultivate relationships with customers across Fred Hutch and Consortium partners and drive adoption of best practices and tools.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics OR equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of the customer and synthesize pain points into a list of requirements.
  • Ability to manage one’s own time, projects, and day-to-day work.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, multi-task and prioritize a team or project’s workload.
  • Foundational knowledge of AWS, Azure, or GCP services (S3, EC2, Batch, LAMDA, RDS, AWS Config, IAM, CloudWatch, CloudTrail strongly preferred).
  • Foundational knowledge of Python, Julia, R, PowerShell, Bash, or other scripting languages.
  • Foundational knowledge of GitHub, GitLab, or other CI/CD tools.
  • Foundational knowledge of Terraform, Ansible, or other infrastructure-as-code tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a research/educational setting and/or support of clinical trials.
  • Previous experience communicating and presenting to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $81,979 to $122,969 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
