The Linux System Engineer is responsible for supporting a scientific community of Data Scientists, Statisticians, Computational Biologists and Scientific Programmers with complex and frequently changing IT requirements. You will be responsible for support for HPC systems running Ubuntu Linux. These systems include HPC clusters (7000+ cores on premise) with additional resources running in AWS, Google, and Azure, application servers hosting research projects, and Ubuntu-based scientific desktop workstations. Your duties will include configuration and day-to-day support of hardware, operating systems, and applications for HPC/Linux infrastructure both on premises and in the cloud. Job responsibilities also include monitoring and improving server, storage and network performance. You will join a team of senior engineers and will interact with stakeholders from the scientific community and other IT groups at the Hutch to identify needs, prioritize and dispatch tickets, as well as develop new projects.  The HPC Engineer III position reports to the System Engineering Manager in Scientific Computing.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as technical lead or as a team member for complex projects that provide new or improved Scientific Computing services
  • Provide and help direct customer support for scientific software and scientific computing environment as required
  • Identify and lead efforts to improve processes by increasing automation using appropriate tools
  • Develop and maintain configuration management systems for local and cloud computing solutions
  • Proactively identify issues and opportunities, and troubleshoot and tune cloud solutions for Scientific Computing services
  • Follow and offer improvements for Scientific Computing processes such as change management, incident management, and issue management
  • Develop and maintain end-user documentation including how-to documents and contribute to sciwiki.fredhutch.org
  • Conduct training on a variety of topics of expertise for the Scientific Computing team and Fred Hutch scientific community
  • Build and grow relationships with other IT professionals at Fred Hutch, and educate them about Scientific Computing
  • May require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice Identify opportunities and suggest methods to improve operational efficiencies
  • Identify and train in technical area(s) to develop expertise to support Scientific Computing goals
  • Mentor entry-level Engineers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years as a systems engineer or managing Linux systems in a networked environment with increasing responsibilities
  • Experience in at least two scripting languages
  • Minimum of 2 years configuration management experience (chef, puppet, ansible, cfengine, terraform, etc.)
  • Ability to use and provide support for gitlab and github
  • Proven track record researching, developing, implementing, and socializing technical solutions
  • Experience with database technologies, particularly Postgres
  • Programming, design, data management, and system analysis skills
  • Expertise and knowledge of gathering, developing, and documenting analytic/reporting requirements
  • Ability to work and collaborate in a complex and dynamic environment
  • Ability to work independently, multitask, and prioritize workload

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in driving operational excellence and best practices
  • Experience with cluster or workload managers (Moab, Slurm, Torque, SGE)
  • Web stack experience (apache, nginx, tomcat, etc.)
  • Python and Bash for scripting and tooling
  • R programming experience
  • Linux performance tuning and troubleshooting
  • Two years experience using and deploying solutions with Docker
  • Two years experience with Cloud Computing technologies (AWS, Google, Azure)
  • OSS Virtualization/cloud technologies: Openstack, KVM, etc.
  • Experience in a research or educational setting
  • Pursue continued professional and technical education and training

The annual base salary range for this position is from $101,359 to $160,213 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
