An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program and serves as the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network.  The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) and Coronavirus Prevention Network (CoVPN) Laboratory in the Immunology & Vaccine Development Program of the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Division is dedicated to understanding human immunology and mechanisms of vaccine-induced immune protection against HIV and other infectious diseases.

 

The Fred Hutch offers a vibrant intellectual environment within a beautiful lakeside campus in Seattle’s South Lake Union biotech hub.  The Fred Hutch campus contains five major research buildings along with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and is in close proximity to major research partners, such as the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle Children’s Research Institute and the Allen Institute for Immunology.

 

The Boonyaratanakornkit Laboratory within the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division is recruiting a Research Technician I or II to perform lab experiments studying antibodies and B cells against respiratory viruses. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in virology, molecular biology, and/or small animal work.

Responsibilities

  • Running of standard assays such as PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, transfections, cell line maintenance, ELISA’s, flow cytometry
  • Viral production, purification, and neutralization assays
  • Collect and analyze data and maintain experimental records
  • May write up an experiment plan, perform and lead experiments, assist in analysis, and provide a report with data interpretation
  • Assist in the design of experiments; may be responsible for the performance of individual research projects
  • May conduct literature reviews to assist in determining most suitable methods to be used in research
  • Identify methodological problems in research protocols and implement modifications to optimize experimental results.
  • Prepare and present written or oral progress reports concerning studies including assembly, organization, and interpretation of data
  • May perform statistical analyses, write computer programs, or manage research data base
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Research Technician I minimum qualifications - BA/BS in a scientific field required. Must have scientific knowledge in the area of study and basic laboratory skills. Independent research experience outside of laboratory course work is required.
  • Research Technician II minimum qualifications - Intermediate level position requiring 2 years previous experience working in a laboratory and BA/BS. Independent research experience outside of laboratory course work is usually necessary.
  • BA/BS degree required with preference for microbiology, immunology, virology, or similar areas of focus
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in virology and molecular biology
  • The technician must show initiative, the willingness to take up new skills and responsibilities, and be a team player
  • Must be willing to work with biohazardous/infectious agents, human specimens, and rodent colonies under carefully controlled conditions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently are essential to success in this position, as are good communication and organizational skills
  • Must be flexible and willing to work some evenings and weekends as needed

The hourly pay range for the I position is from $21.56 to $30.69 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.   

The hourly pay range for the II position is from $24.96 to $35.53 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
