Precision Oncology holds incredible promise for improving the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancer in patient populations. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center has recently established the Stuart and Molly Sloan Precision Oncology Institute which integrates fundamental biology, technology, immunology, data science and clinical experience into strategies to prevent, detect and treat cancer.

To achieve this incredible promise requires significant new data science, machine learning, and clinical data analysis methodologies. The postdoctoral fellow will focus on the development of tools for translational data science in precision oncology. Depending on the interests and talents of the postdoctoral fellow, they may contribute to new data infrastructure or data management techniques, new machine learning methodology, new implementation science, or new clinical trial methodology. They will work in collaboration with colleagues in the basic, computational, and medical sciences to translate these new data driven techniques for use in the clinic.

Specifically, the postdoc will have the following duties:

  • Reading relevant literature to understand the current state of the art.
  • Developing new statistical models leveraging public and investigator collected high throughput data
  • Writing new R packages or Shiny Apps for implementation of developed methodology
  • Developing benchmarks and working together with staff to evaluate algorithms on those benchmarks.
  • Collaborating with computational and biomedical collaborators to evaluate and apply the developed methodologies to improve analyses
  • Collaborating with Fred Hutch IT and Scientific Computing Staff to translate ideas into practice
  • Contributing to writing papers and software testing.

  • The successful applicant will have (or will be in the process of obtaining) a PhD in biostatistics, statistics, computer science, machine learning, or another statistical or computational discipline
  • Creative and thoughtful
  • Familiar with R and R packages
