The Staff Scientist provides specialized consulting, training and data analysis support to researchers at the Fred Hutch and across the wider Fred Hutch/UW Cancer Consortium.  This position requires the ability to work independently, manage multiple overlapping projects, and communicate effectively with faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and research staff on a wide range of topics in biology, microscopy techniques, sound experimental design, and imaging analysis.


The Staff Scientist reports to the Associate Director of the Cellular Imaging Shared Resource and will work with Fred Hutch scientists to incorporate imaging techniques using light microscopy into their research programs. 


Job Duties

  • Work with imaging core staff to provide seamless support to Cellular Imaging users, from experimental design through data collection and advanced image analysis.
  • Provide microscope training for groups and individual Cellular Imaging users
  • Maintain and operate a variety of light microscopes
  • Assist with the introduction and implementation of new imaging technologies, including light sheet and super-resolution techniques
  • Troubleshoot microscope issues and work with vendors to resolve issues
  • Provide figures and written sections describing methods and results for manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications
  • Assist/Provide support to Core Director with applications for funding and grants (e.g. S10 instrumentation grants)


  • A PhD in Biology, Biophysics, or related science field with a minimum of three years of additional post-graduate work experience.
  • A mastery of a variety of commercial imaging platforms and software, as well as advanced knowledge in both the theory and application of light microscopy methods (e.g., widefield, confocal, deconvolution, light sheet, and super-resolution microscopy).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Special consideration given to a candidate with TIRF, light sheet, and/or 2 photon microscope technology expertise
  • Experience with Python or MATLAB related to image analysis is a plus

The annual base salary range for this position is from $111,748 to $176,634 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. Relocation offered to those who qualify.
