The Brent Lab works on the causes and consequences of nongenetic phenotypic variation, and also on means to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery during this century.  Part of that latter effort is the development of Augmented Reality (AR) as a medium to help biologists and other workers carry out R&D and other complex work.  The Brent lab is part of the Division of Basic Sciences at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research.  Work in this Division spans a wide range of basic research projects, and DBS is an exceptionally active and interactive scientific environment that offers high quality scientific education to students immersed in its activities.



To support the AR work, the Brent lab is seeking one or more work study students from Computer Science, Bio-Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related fields of study (could include biology, and certain kinds of experimental physics and biophysics).  Student(s) would help develop supporting software and content to enable Augmented Reality guidance for lab procedures.

Ideal candidates will be available for 19 hours per week and be eligible for state or federal work study. Schedule can vary depending on class or other work schedule. Some work can be done remotely.


Job duties:

  • Test UI/UX and content for Augmented Reality guidance for lab procedures
  • Document bugs clearly and extensively
  • Help with acquisition, annotation and curation of image and other data to be used for machine learning and to generate and implement other ideas for computer vision
  • Contribute to a larger project to use AR to aid biomedical research and development



  • Graduation from High School or equivalent 
  • Eligibility for state or federal work-study at a participating school is required
  • Literate in Linux command line
  • Familiar with Python and/or C# language and, ideally JSON file format
  • Flexible and able to work independently without supervision

  • The ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in Bio-Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field
  • The ideal candidate will have extensive programming experience, as evidenced by vettable code
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in object oriented programming, and interest in computer vision and machine learning including non-canonical approaches.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $18.75 to $24.71 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
