The Payer Relations Specialist is the primary contact at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center for maintaining and managing contracted payer and health plan relationships; reviewing managed care operation policies and addressing administrative issues with contracted payers and health plans. This role supports the work of Fred Hutchinson's payer contracting and payer relations department and is a key team member in the organization's work with contracted managed care plans.


  • Facilitates efficient contract operations by coordinating and establishing a regular touch point with key payers for policy clarifications, issue resolution, updates, etc.
  • Serves as point of escalation, first line of contact for payer-related issues.
  • Leads monthly huddle with Fred Hutch clinical operations subject matter experts in response to changes in health plan and payer policies. Coordinates, tracks and follows up on operational issues with Fred Hutch’s contracted payers.
  • Responsible for the communication and dissemination of managed care plan policies, newsletter updates, appropriate contract and payer information throughout the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center system.
  • Facilitates timely compliance with health plan credentialing requirements, on-site visits and completes various applications and survey request on behalf of Fred Hutch contracting department (COEs, NCCN, ASTCT).
  • Maintains payer contracting files, facilitates mailing and tracking of notices, correspondence and payer-related documents. Including the maintenance of SharePoint as an internal information source
  • Develops partnerships across the organization, including working closely with revenue cycle, corporate finance, and service line managers to address operational issues and help ensure strong financial performance.
  • Responsible for auditing and attestation of payer directories and works to ensure accuracy of that information on behalf of Fred Hutch
  • Organize, oversee, and/or participate in payer operations meetings in collaboration with the Contracting & Payer Relations Manager
  • Support the implementation of the payer relations and contracting strategy.
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of 3 years experience in healthcare administration, payer contracting, finance or revenue cycle operations.
  • Experience with provider/hospital operations and/or health insurance
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Critical thinking skills. Ability to problem solve effectively and creatively
  • Ability to be proactive, self-directing and take initiative
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team as the situation requires.
  • Effective organizational, time management and planning skills.
  • Effectively analyze and accurately interpret technical information.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite


  • Knowledge and familiarity with medical terminology
  • 2 years of formal project management or leadership experience
  • Health administration, public health or business degree

This position is patient facing and/or requires access to Fred Hutch clinical facilities. As such, full COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment, without exception. Booster doses are strongly recommended but not required. If declining a booster, completion of the COVID-19 Vaccination Status Form Questionnaire and COVID-19 Booster Declination Training is required. The annual base salary range for this position is from $67,445.00 to $101,167.00 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
