The Accounting Specialist III position is an integral part of the Accounting Team which has a wide range of responsibilities relating to all aspects of the Fred Hutch finances including financial reporting, policy setting, internal and data controls and transaction processing for a $2B international organization.  This position performs accounting functions that require general accounting knowledge and analytical skills as well as transaction processing. Levering available technology, including financial applications, is an integral aspect of this position. Effort is the process of documenting the activities worked by an individual during the reporting period, as required per Federal regulations. This position reports directly to the Assistant Controller.


  • Responsible for all facets related to timely and accurate reporting of effort distributions
  • Process salary redistributions as requested
  • Prepare and provide effort reports
  • Coordinate with programs on effort procedures
  • Enforce Center and Federal effort policies
  • Interact with various groups to resolve labor cost errors
  • Reconcile and report on late effort
  • Prepare payroll, benefit, vacation, sabbatical, and incentive related payroll and benefit journal entries and supporting documents
  • Review General Ledger and other subsystems for data quality
  • Reconcile General Ledger accounts and prepare audit and tax schedules
  • Assist with testing system enhancements, upgrades and reports
  • Document and update policies and procedures as required
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned


  • High school graduation or GED. Bachelor’s degree preferred in related field, but not required
  • Minimum of four years bookkeeping, budget, tax or related financial experience
  • Strong technology skills including efficiency with keyboard and mouse as well as experience with desktop applications including MS Excel, MS Word and MS Outlook
  • Must be willing to develop expertise in FMS PeopleSoft and related queries and standard reports, e.g. invoices, journal entries. Training will be provided


  • Person must be diligent and self motivated with attention to detail
  • Ability to consistently and accurately process transactions
  • Must have excellent work habits, including organization and timeliness
  • Should have strong interpersonal communication skills and desire to work in team-oriented environments
  • Must have confidence to enforce UG & Center policies which can entail respectful but definitive guidelines provided to Center personnel at all levels
