Research Technician I/II: Molecular Microbiology/Epigenetic Engineering of Prokaryotes/Eukaryotes—Johnston Lab

The Johnston Laboratory within the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, is an interdisciplinary and highly collaborative team of microbiologists, synthetic microbiologists, bioinformaticians and engineers. We focus on microbial epigenetics and the application of synthetic biology approaches to understand and engineer the human microbiota. Using cutting edge technologies and methodologies, we seek to gain a deeper functional understanding of what bacteria are doing and how they are doing it, and then to use that information to create novel therapeutics and engineer the next generation of microbe-based technologies for application in human medicine, synthetic microbiology and bioengineering.


We are recruiting a highly motivated research technician with strong expertise in microbiology/molecular biology, or genetic engineering of prokaryotes or eukaryotes to join our cutting-edge genomics/epigenomics efforts.


The research technician will be given the opportunity and be responsible for conducting independent and creative research related to the overall mission of the laboratory, specifically relating to design/construction/validation and testing of a suite of novel CRISPR-dCas9-effector systems.


  • Work with the PI, post-doctoral fellows and incumbent technicians using synthetic microbiology approaches to design and create genetic tools for non-model organisms of clinical relevance
  • Acquire cutting-edge skills in PacBio Single Molecule Real-time SMRT-Seq platforms, synthetic microbiology research, research planning and strategy, and data analysis and interpretation.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of the field in which they are working, and working with the PI, as well as independently, on the planning, design, execution, trouble-shooting, and interpretation of experiments
  • Make detailed observations, record data and present results
  • Assist post docs and fellows in the day-to-day activities
  • Interpret experiments related to assigned projects



  • Research Tech I level: Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Research Tech II level: Bachelor's degree and minimum 2 years’ experience with standard molecular biology and microbiology techniques (nucleic acid isolation/manipulation/PCR/cloning/recombineering transformation, protein isolation/purification)
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multitask efficiently is a must



  • Prior experience in the epigenomic editing, DNA methylation analyses, or the design/construction/application of CRISPR-Cas/dCas effectors in the context of eukaryote or prokaryote research
  • Prior experience with DNA sequencing-based technologies (Illumina/PacBio/Oxford Nanopore)
  • Prior experience and working knowledge of scientific programs/scripting for analysis of DNA sequencing data
  • Highly motivated individual interested in a career in biological research or medicine, with a keen interest molecular biology/synthetic biology
  • Technically meticulous when conducting experiments
  • Highly organized in record-keeping
  • Independent, intellectually passionate and able to display scientific initiative
  • Excellent teamwork, time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic and results-oriented environment
