The Associate Operations Director (AOD) serves as a leader for the Human Biology (HB) Division and reports to the Associate Vice President, Division Operations (AVP). The AOD partners with the AVP and Division Executive Leadership to lead and manage research administration and operations, budgeting, personnel, space, and strategic planning to support our scientific mission. The AOD contributes to high-level administrative decisions, policy development, strategic planning, and team leadership. The AOD is considered a leader in the Scientific Division Research Administration Community and may act as a delegate of the AVP with a focus in one or more of the following key disciplines: general research administration & operations, team training and supervision, finance, strategy, project management, process improvement, facilities and equipment management, coordination of regulatory affairs, grants administration, and change management. This role will have the opportunity to work partially at our campus and remotely.


Division Administration & Operations Leadership:

  • Collaborate with AVP to manage general Division operations to promote broader scientific mission, ensure administrative excellence, and provide expert advice and support to faculty, staff and other Hutch administrative and leadership groups as requested.
  • Partner with AVP to manage Division space and equipment, including office and lab space allocation, building and renovations, and major equipment acquisitions.
  • Partner with AVP and SVP/Division Director in the development of long- and short-term strategic, operational, and business plans associated with the Division.
  • Independently manage and execute Division initiatives and projects as assigned by the AVP.
  • Represent Division on Hutch-wide processes and administrative committees and working groups as designated by the AVP.
  • Contribute to continuous process improvement plans for Division operations (identifying process issues, planning and executing solutions, and evaluating outcomes).

Team Training and Supervision:

  • Hire and manage diverse team of Research Administrators, providing oversight, guidance, mentoring, and critical feedback as needed.
  • Continuously evaluate and monitor support model for Division faculty to ensure excellent administrative and operational support for research.
  • Ensure relevant, engaging training and professional development opportunities are available to team.

Grants Administration:

  • Advise faculty and Research Administrators on best practices; interface with central administrative departments to align communications around new policies/processes.
  • Perform research administration duties for faculty as needed; plan for and ensure compliant and effective funding, budget, and regulatory administration, and general administrative support.


  • A bachelor’s degree is required for this position.
  • Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible administrative management experience is required.
  • Demonstrates conceptual strategic planning.
  • Proven ability to execute detailed and complex tasks.
  • Strong people and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to think creatively to promote excellence in science and research administration at Fred Hutch.
  • Experience managing a diverse team, thinking globally, projecting future needs, and attunement to day-to-day Division operations.
  • High-level knowledge and experience in research administration, strategic planning, and business practices are essential.
