We have an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Manager with the McElrath laboratory and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN).  The position is for a Laboratory Manager to supervise the HVTN B cell endpoints and exploratory studies group (BEES). In this role, the Laboratory Manager will participate in studies of human B cell immunity to evaluate responses to candidate vaccines. The laboratory’s focus is on clinical trials of HIV and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines as well as investigations of immune responses to HIV and SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) infections. The Laboratory Manager will conduct laboratory studies, supervise and train research technicians, and implement laboratory quality assurance processes to maintain compliance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP). 


Reporting to a HVTN Laboratory Staff Scientist, the Lab Manager will lead, mentor, and train a team, design and carry out experiments, and review and analyze data in support of laboratory goals.




1. Manage the HVTN BEES laboratory technicians.

  • Supervise, train, and mentor research technicians and students, fostering a positive, collaborative work environment.
  • Lead immune assays, primarily focused on B cell responses to HIV and SARS-CoV-2 investigational vaccines and infection: primarily high parameter flow cytometry and cell sorting; other related assays as needed.
  • Oversee the analysis of flow cytometry data and results.
  • Coordinate with other management staff for the daily operation of the laboratory.
  • Prepare progress reports and documents in support of studies.

2. Maintain equipment and implement novel techniques related to flow cytometry.

  • Oversight of the HVTN cell sorters.
  • Development of novel flow cytometry-based panels and assays.
  • Responsible for the design and implementation of major projects and assays related to the research goals of the laboratory.

3. Interface with collaborating researchers.

  • Maintain communication with others in the scientific community regarding issues related to both the general project area and the specific research project.
  • Stay abreast of the relevant literature.
  • Write and edit methods and/or results for reports, publications or presentation.
  • Coordinate with statistical groups and internal and external stakeholders.


  • Senior position requiring a minimum of a BA/BS in related field, graduate degree preferred; three to five years' progressive experience in a research laboratory setting, or related.  Two to three years of laboratory management experience.  
  • Substantial experience with multi-parameter flow cytometry analysis, assay development and standardization is required.
  • Experience with GCLP/GLP is desirable, as well as a high level of attention to detail, organizational skills, and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented research environment in conjunction with a background of collaborative leadership and supervisory duties.
  • Proficiency in the following computer programs is necessary: MS Office, Illustrator or other drawing program, Graph Pad Prism or JMP, and FlowJo.

In addition to job duties at Fred Hutch, this position also requires access to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which requires COVID-19 vaccination without exceptions.
