  • Under direct supervision of department manager, the Clinical Laboratory Specialist II is responsible for accessioning and processing clinical and research specimens in the SCCA Pathology Laboratory, staining bone marrow aspirate smear slides, and answering phone inquiries.  Additional duties as assigned, could include filing blocks and slides or performing daily and weekly laboratory maintenance. The successful candidate will work closely with histotechnicians, residents/fellows, and pathologists.

  • The work schedule for this position is 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job in order to carry out the primary responsibilities.


  • Process/prepare biological specimens such as peripheral blood, bone marrow, buccal/saliva or other tissue samples for clinical testing and/or research.
  • Freeze, store and ship specimens as required.
  • Inventory processed specimens into the lab information management system, inventory databases or paper records as appropriate.
  • Aliquot reagents, prepare solutions, stock supplies, and remove biohazard waste from lab areas.
  • Monitor and maintain equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, and water baths.
  • Set up and calibrate laboratory instruments; prepare calibration reagents, record and tabulate instrument data; and keep records.
  • Consult with technologists, supervisor and/or manager regarding problematic samples.



  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Computer/keyboard proficiency.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Manual computation skills.
  • Ability to communicate verbally in person, on the phone and in writing in a clear, concise and professional manner.
  • Ability to work under high pressure in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.



  • Some College course work emphasizing laboratory science.
  • At least one year of laboratory experience.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems.

SCCA has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, and there are no exceptions for any employee who is patient-facing and/or requires access to SCCA facilities.
