The CLIA laboratory technician will assist with the daily operation of the Clinical Trials Pathology lab (CTP).  The Research Technician will support testing personnel by following standard operating procedures for sample intake and processing, equipment maintenance, reagent preparation, inventory, organization, and CLIA documentation.   

Responsibilities

  • Receive and accession incoming samples including accurate labeling of cassettes and slides, routing, and tracking.
  • Perform and document routine daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of laboratory equipment. 
  • File and organize slides, paraffin blocks, and paperwork. 
  • Package, ship, and track samples requiring return or transport to outside facilities – including dry ice and cold chain shipments.
  • Perform cell processing tasks on clinical trial samples per established SOPs, such as PBMC isolation from whole blood. 
  • Participate in group meetings with laboratory staff, pathologists, and medical director.
  • Prepare reagents from detailed laboratory procedures and document that quality control standards are being met.
  • Perform periodic inventory of reagents and samples stored in CTP.
  • Submit stained slides to digital pathology for scanning and manage the storing and sharing of images. 
  • Assist in organizing work and storage space and in general lab upkeep.
  • Monitor hazardous waste levels and coordinate with EH&S when needed. 
  • Perform routine histology support as needed.
  • Act as specimen courier between UWMC and various Fred Hutch laboratories for protocol related biopsy samples. 
  • Completed all required documentation and training. 
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is required for this position.
  • Familiarity with histotechnology or medical laboratory science is highly desirable but not required.
  • The successful technician must be able to work accurately and efficiently, be detail oriented, and work both independently and within a group. Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills are required.
  • This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work positively in a customer oriented environment. In addition, the technician in this position must be flexible, independent, and skilled at organizing and prioritizing tasks.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer as well as LIMS databasing is desirable. 

 

In addition to job duties at Fred Hutch, this position also requires access to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which requires COVID-19 vaccination without exceptions.
Accordingly, as a condition of employment for this Fred Hutch position, newly hired employees must provide proof of vaccination before their first day of employment.
