The Outpatient Surgery Clinic Nurse provides clinical support and care management to surgical oncology providers and their patient panels. As the primary point of contact for surgical oncology patients, the Surgery Clinic Nurse provides continuity of care through nursing assessments, triage, patient education, and care coordination. The nurse is an integral part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team which collaborates to provide the highest level of care for patients. The nurse in this position will responsible for coordination of care, patient and family education and triage, and in-clinic support for providers.


 Coordination of Care

  • Establish relationships with patients and families to help them navigate their disease and surgical plan of care
  • Coordinate care within the SCCA/UW Medical Center facility as well as with outside healthcare facilities
  • Establish competency with surgery specific post-operative DME and equipment needs
  • Assist with peri-op coordination of supportive care referrals, anticoagulation management, pre-op medical/cardiac clearance as needed
  • Possess an understanding of the surgical scheduling process
  • Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary services to provide a continuum of care for the patient.

Education and Triage

  • Act as primary point of contact for patients/caregivers to provide education, triage of symptom management, in-person, on the phone, and through electronic communications
  • Provide pre-surgery education and assessment for patients seen in specialty clinics.
  • Provide telephone triage before and after surgery to assess for surgery specific questions, complications, emergent triage situations needing immediate care
  • Assess patients both in person and over the phone for DVT, infection, paralytic ileus, wound/incision status, pain management, nausea/vomiting, swelling, and other possible post-op complications.
  • Review medical history to assess for any risk factors/comorbidities with full understanding of surgical procedure.


In-Clinic Provider Support

  • Assist providers with minor in clinic procedures as needed per disease specialty (i.e. biopsies, intratumoral injections, joint injections, fine needle aspirations, nasolaryngoscopy)
  • Perform dressing changes, drain removal, suture removal, staple removal
  • Possess strong working knowledge of SCCA Policies and Procedures
  • Demonstrate proper clean/sterile technique for the set-up and breakdown of procedures done in the Surgery clinics



  • Nursing degree
  • Current Washington State nursing license
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years
  • Critical thinking skills; the ability to practice the cognitive skills of analyzing, applying standards, discriminating, information seeking, logical reasoning, predicting, and transforming knowledge
  • Time Management skills; the ability to organize and manage time and tasks independently
  • Effective listening and communication skills
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job in order to carry out the primary responsibilities
  • Ability to develop clinical judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively by looking and listening for cues, asking open-ended questions, exploring cues, using pauses, screening responses, and clarifying response.
  •  Ability to effectively listen by using reflecting, acknowledging, summarizing, empathizing, and paraphrasing skill.
  • Ability to effectively provide information by checking what information the person knows already, giving small amounts of information at a time, using clear terms and avoiding jargon, avoiding detail unless it is requested, checking for understanding, and pausing and waiting for a response.



  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Two years of medical-surgical nursing experience
  • Outpatient Oncology experience

SCCA has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, and there are no exceptions for any employee who is patient-facing and/or requires access to SCCA facilities.
