About the department

The Pharmacokinetics Laboratory at SCCA is specialized in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) for patients diagnosed with various blood disorders. The laboratory provides its expertise and support to many providers who seek to improve their patient’s transplant outcomes. Providing clinical services for more than 15 years, it is one of the most highly regarded laboratories in the medical community and has clients across USA and Canada.

 

This role is:

 

  • Responsible for the scientific and technical oversight of a clinical/bioanalytical laboratory, which is specialized in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM).  Must ensure compliance with all applicable regulations to ensure high quality testing and patient safety.
  • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively with the Pharmacokinetics (PK) Laboratory team and upper administration.
  • Must be accessible to provide oversight of pharmacokinetic modeling of busulfan and subsequent dose recommendations.  Provides guidance and works closely with the Pharmacokinetics Laboratory Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that testing systems and methodologies developed and performed for busulfan concentration analyses meet all quality requirements under CLIA/CAP guidelines. Work with the Laboratory Manager to establish a laboratory quality plan, ensuring effective quality control, quality assurance, quality improvement, and patient safety. Ensure plan is implemented and reviewed annually with appropriate documentation.
  • Verify that written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are consistent with the methods performed in the laboratory and are adequate to determine the reliability, accuracy, precision, and other relevant characteristics of test methods.  Ensure the establishment and maintenance of acceptable levels of analytical performance per SOP for each testing system and method. Ensure all necessary remedial actions taken are documented whenever significant deviations occur from the laboratory's established performance standards.
  • Be accessible to the laboratory to provide onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation to laboratory staff and clients during all laboratory operating hours, or provide qualified back-up coverage as needed regarding test results and their interpretation. Work with SCCA/UW Pharmacy and other back-up resources as appropriate to prepare a monthly schedule for PK data review, dose recommendations, and consultation as needed.
  • Ensure the laboratory is enrolled in a CAP approved proficiency testing program. With the laboratory manager, ensure proficiency testing samples are analyzed under the same conditions as routine patient specimens. Review all proficiency testing results, and ensure that a corrective action plan is followed for unsatisfactory proficiency test performance.
  • Ensure that reports of busulfan concentration results include necessary information required for attending physicians to choose the optimal busulfan dose to attain the desired target exposure as determined by the physician.
  • Provide consultation to physicians and investigators in developing new treatment plans and clinical research protocols relating to personalized busulfan dosing and clinical pharmacology. Participate in preparing related publications as primary or contributing author.
  • Provide opportunities for ongoing education and training for laboratory staff to maintain and enhance expertise in pharmacokinetics testing. Provide education to clinicians and other groups, as appropriate.
  • Ensure that communication and collaboration with the Clinical Laboratory Medical Director, Administration, Pharmacy, PK Laboratory Manager and staff are ongoing and effective.

Qualifications

Required:

 

  • Pharmacy degree and at least one year of pharmacy practice experience or a pharmacy practice residency.
  • Must be eligible for licensure in the State of Washington.
  • Experience/knowledge in/of pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics.
  • Strong leadership qualities; excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail; excellent skills in critical thinking, problem solving and ability to make independent decisions.

 

Preferred:

 

  • Fellowship training is strongly preferred.
  • Prior oncology knowledge/experience.
  • Experience involving analytical assays for quantitation of drug compounds, such as GC-MSD, LC-MSD, and/or HPLC.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in accomplishing objectives in a complex organization.

SCCA has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, and there are no exceptions for any employee who is patient-facing and/or requires access to SCCA facilities.

Exceptions exist only for employees whose positions are fully remote, with no required access to campus. As a condition of employment, newly hired employees requiring access to campus must provide proof of vaccination before their first day of employment.
