Gateway is a custom developed clinical application and research database that is the foundation of The Hutch’s legacy in cancer research. As a leader on the Gateway team, you will help lead the design of a system that will support a broad base of user needs, while demonstrating your ability to deliver high quality software in a complex environment. The Gateway application is managed in the Hutch’s Center Information Technology organization.

Responsibilities

The Gateway System Software Engineer IV is a critical member of a dedicated and motivated team supporting an application directly affecting both day-to-day cancer patient care and related critical research, spanning multiple decades, working to alleviate the burden of cancer. A unique opportunity to apply your software engineering skills, you will be an integral part of a team of developers, project managers and product owners, supporting a critical and complex legacy enterprise application while designing and developing an application for the future. Within this role you will build an understanding of the existing Gateway application and environment and ensure the ongoing support of patients, clinicians and researchers. This position works in close collaboration with a dedicated Gateway team and reports to the Gateway Manager. 

 

This role spans the following areas:

  • Follow team standards for programming, configuration control, testing, quality assurance, and version control. Perform rigorous quality assurance validation to ensure that high quality products are released
  • Work with vendors, IT Services staff, and clients to scope, develop, document, and implement technical requirements within system infrastructure
  • Coordinate and oversee complex programming projects assisting other programmers and staff as necessary
  • Apply your understanding of the Gateway system to ensure user requirements are met
  • Design, test, implement, monitor, and maintain real time and batch interfaces between multiple systems and applications (Ingres, Corepoint, EPIC)
  • Develop data validation queries and system monitoring scripts
  • Build high quality, well documented software to support patient care
  • Monitor, maintain, and report application KPI’s including functional health and resource utilization
  • Work with a dedicated information security team to evaluate and proactively address security vulnerabilities
  • Mentor teammates to build team knowledge to create a sustainable staffing environment
  • Participate in the development of a strategic application roadmap working with center IT architects

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (Math, Chemistry, Business) or demonstrated dedication to accessing educational experiences consistent with the responsibilities of this role
  • Minimum of 10 years professional software development experience
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • 2-3 years relational database experience using SQL
  • Programming skills using Windows C# and embedded SQL in C
  • Interest in working in an OpenVMS environment, including installation, troubleshooting and debugging (training will be provided)
  • Ability to rapidly learn new technologies and skills
  • Confidentiality and Privacy - Requires strict confidentiality of administrative, employee and patient information, including compliance with HIPAA requirements
  • Superb communication skills
  • Proven hands-on experience deploying and maintaining complex, custom, multi-tiered application systems
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively
  • Dedication to supporting the mission of the Hutch
  • Dedication to continuous learning
     

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, electronic health information standards (HL7)
  • Experience in OpenVMS
  • Experience in working with Ingres or other relational DBMS, esp. on the OpenVMS platform
  • Report writer tool experience (e.g. Crystal reports)
