Situated within the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division (VIDD), the Vaccines and Immunology Statistical Center (VISC) partners with world-class research programs and immunological laboratories to tackle global public health initiatives in infectious disease.  The VISC team of statisticians, computational biologists, and epidemiologists provide statistical and computational support to global partners to conduct clinical and preclinical research studies with an aim to accelerate discovery in the global health arena. Our primary area of focus is on the immunological evaluation of novel vaccines. In addition to providing statistical consultation and hands-on design and analysis work, our mission is to drive the science on methods development for immune correlates analysis. The team brings rigorous technical expertise in study design, data management, high-dimensional data analysis, and machine learning methodology to projects, along with decades of domain experience in immunology and vaccinology that cuts across disease foci including HIV, tuberculosis, COVID-19, malaria, and others. VISC operates within two global research networks: the Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery (CAVD) and the Global Health Discovery Collaboratory (GHDC), both of which are supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. VISC is seeking a Research Project Manager II-III (‘Project Manager’) to provide operational support for our team.

The Project Manager works as a member of the Project Management Team, including other Project Managers, Program Manager and Associate Director as well as across other functional teams in a matrix organization to develop a roadmap to bring each project to completion. The Project Manager is expected to establish and maintain strong, positive, and productive relationships among BBE faculty, SCHARP staff, external partners, and stakeholders. Occasional domestic and/or international travel may be needed.


The ideal candidate will bring a curious mind, an appetite for learning, and dedication to improving global health outcomes. Specifically, we are looking for a data-driven candidate who will be an excellent communicator within and across teams and with external partners. The successful candidate will be an expert problem-solver, a keen investigator finding and clearing blockages, and someone who is able to track the details of dynamic activities and moving parts using key project management platforms to aid this process. The candidate will be capable of both planning and managing the unexpected.  An ability to work seamlessly with a multidisciplinary and a multicultural team in a matrix environment, and commitment to a positive team culture are traits that will foster success in this role.


  • Work with teams composed of researchers, statisticians, and other project managers to define project requirements, scope of work, staffing requirements, organization, and approach.
  • Working closely with Associate Director and study teams, negotiate, develop and manage project milestones and timelines.
  • Ensure team and stakeholders are informed of project status and issues.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on an ongoing basis and hold study teams accountable for timely deliverables.
  • Intake and prioritize incoming requests for analysis and statistical support.
  • Create and maintain study documentation.
  • Set up metadata for studies, participate in the development of data pipelines and processes, receipt, and review of assay data from of immunogenicity studies.
  • Organize and facilitate regular status meetings with project team, preparing and distributing minutes, agendas, and other materials as needed.
  • Contribute to preparation of progress report, proposals, and presentations.
  • Actively participate in planning annual Scientific Advisory Board meeting.
  • Aid in workload management and monitoring.
  • Perform other duties 


Minimum Qualifications

  • RPM II: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Minimum of five years post-bachelor's related project/study management experience
  • RPM III: Master’s Degree in related field required. Minimum of five years post-master's or seven years post-bachelors related project/study management experience in a research setting
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office software, especially Word and Excel.
  • Familiar with data processing and management practices, e.g., data analysis, data pipelines, data transfer, data storage, etc.
  • Experience in facilitating and building consensus in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Able to build successful working relationships with a wide variety of collaborators and experience facilitating meetings (internal and external). 
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Able and willing to work independently as well as collaboratively using superb organizational, project, team, and time management skills.
  • Capable of managing the unexpected, planning, and keeping track of multiple moving pieces.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of immunology laboratory methods (e.g., immunoassays, flow cytometry).
  • Experience in clinical and/or pre-clinical trial or regulated research settings.
  • Experience with managing immunology, infectious disease and/or virology research projects.
  • Specific training or certification in project management best practices such as PMP.
  • Familiarity with project management software, for example, Smartsheet, Jira, or Notion.
  • Experience with data analytics and visualization.
  • Experience in grant or proposal writing.
