The Director, Flow Cytometry manages and provides services as part of the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource.

Responsibilities

The incumbent reports to the Sr. Director, Molecular & Cellular Scientific Resources or designee and works independently in managing resource operations. Special knowledge and expertise are used in performing the technical aspects of the job while strong interpersonal and communication skills are used in interacting with users and in promoting the resource.

  • Train, supervise and assist staff in the maintenance, calibration and operation of instruments and associated computers.
  • Oversee the daily operation of the laboratory. Hire and train flow cytometry staff giving feedback through mentorship and performance appraisals.
  • Maintain cost effectiveness and usefulness of the laboratory.
  • Work with Research Administration leadership to project and develop annual resource budget.
  • Write grant applications for the purchase of new instrumentation and prepare Core Grant material, noncompetitive renewals, and Scientific Report narrative.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with investigators, soliciting feedback to establish present and future resource needs, and offering assistance as requested.
  • Supervise and ensure the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of record keeping including daily schedules, instrument logbooks, records of user time, personnel and staff time, supply inventories, purchase orders, equipment use and maintenance and monthly billing.
  • Work with Resource Administration leadership and Faculty Advisory Committee to establish fee schedules and policies for Center and outside users.
  • Assist and/or collaborate with investigators in the design of experiments that use flow cytometry.
  • Instruct investigators in data collection and analysis methods and in the proper use of equipment, providing individual assistance as necessary.
  • Develop new applications of flow cytometry and methods that will improve the service provided by the laboratory.
  • Keep current in the field of flow cytometry by maintaining contacts with colleagues, attending conferences, and training sessions and maintaining files of current publications in flow cytometry
  • Perform other responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS degree in a scientific discipline or a BS degree with commensurate level of work experience.
  • Minimum of five years research experience using flow cytometry, with a preference for prior flow cytometry core lab management experience.
  • Three years of administrative/management experience with direct reports and conducting performance appraisals.
  • Working knowledge of a broad range of flow cytometric methodologies and computer data analysis techniques.
  • Extensive experience using instrumentation including optics, lasers, and computers.
  • Knowledge of the principles of instrument operation and experience in instrument problem solving.
  • Excellent communication skills, teaching, leadership, and managerial skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in a scientific discipline and 7-10 years of flow cytometry experience.
  • 5+ years of management experience with direct reports.
  • Experience with writing grants for Core equipment and materials.
  • Budget development experience.
