The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is the world’s largest publicly funded multi-disciplinary international collaboration facilitating the development of vaccines to prevent HIV/AIDS. Most recently, the COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) was formed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the US National Institutes of Health to respond to the global pandemic. Using the infectious disease expertise of their existing research networks and global partners, NIAID has directed the HVTN to utilize their experience and expertise to address the pressing need for vaccines and antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The mission of CoVPN is to conduct Phase 3 Efficacy Trials to prevent infection and COVID-19 disease. CoVPN will work to develop and conduct studies to ensure rapid and thorough evaluation of United States government-sponsored COVID-19 vaccines and antibodies for the prevention of COVID-19 disease.


The Research Project Manager, HVTN and CoVPN reports to the Executive Director of the HVTN and CoVPN and has responsibility for independently managing all aspects of study/project operation. Special skills and knowledge are applied in managing project/study operations, in developing methods and materials, and in carrying-out complex research responsibilities. Independent judgment is used in interpreting and applying project/study protocol. The incumbent will develop research materials, assist in writing portions of grant/contract applications and manuscripts, conduct literature searches, and carrying out complex research assignments. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the respective teams, and specific task may vary widely as the work may be project-based and specific to the individual department or study.


Responsibilities may include some or all of the following:

  • Set project goals and timetables, ensuring that all research and administrative activities are completed.
  • Develop, interpret, and administer project/study policies and procedures according to protocol, IRB, grant/contract and Center specifications.
  • Develop, review, edit, and revise research materials which may include questionnaires, data collection instruments, and educational materials.
  • Carry-out complex research responsibilities in support of project/study, requiring advanced related education and/or experience.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in the design of project/study methods such as study subject selection and retention, data collection, and database management.
  • Serve as project/study liaison, representing the project/study to other Center departments, funding sources, affiliated individuals or institutions, and outside organizations. Give presentations as necessary.
  • Plan and attend committee meetings, monitor activities to ensure objectives have been met within designated time frame, and coordinate follow-up activities.
  • Coordinate grant/contract application and renewal process, writing portions of grants/contracts as required.
  • Assist in the analysis of study data.
  • Coordinate the submission of study results, articles, and manuscripts for publication, writing portions of articles/manuscripts as required.
  • Develop and monitor project/study budget, ensuring that all financial allocations and expenditures are in accordance with grant/contract guidelines and requirements.
  • Execute moderately-complex special assignments in support of project/study.
  • Conduct literature searching and update reference manual.
  • Generate tables, figures, graphics, and other visuals for reports, publications, presentations, communications, and reference materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • BA/BS in related field required and 5 years of project/study management experience.
  • MA/MS desired, with minimum 3 years of project/study management experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Grants, contracts and budgeting experience preferred.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in a dynamic environment
  • High level knowledge of Microsoft applications, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook are required. Knowledge of SharePoint is preferred.
