The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is seeking a certified physician assistant (PA-C) or advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) to provide an integrative medicine approach to the evaluation and medical management to Oncology and Hematology patients in the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Integrative Medicine Program. The ARNP/PA-C will provide outpatient supportive care and integrative medicine services to a diverse patient population, will be an ambassador within and outside of SCCA as we continue to build this unique and innovative program. They will facilitate IM clinical research in this population. Integrative Medicine services may be offered from time of diagnosis to end of life. Integrative medicine therapies offered will focus on evidence-based symptom management, rather than cancer treatment, due to the available level of evidence at this time. Our vision is that an integrative medicine approach will become the standard of care for these patients.

The ARNP/PA-C will, within an integrative medicine framework, assess and manage basic health needs of patients, addresses treatment toxicities, perform integrative medicine procedures (e.g., acupressure, medical acupuncture), and consult with and refer to professional peers as needed. They will work collaboratively with the oncology treatment team to coordinate care of their patients. All clinical responsibilities are performed within the scope of practice, institutional privileges and under the supervision of an attending physician.


Distinguishing Characteristics

The ARNP/PA-C at the SCCA functions within their scope of practice and collaborates effectively with other disciplines to provide state-of-the-art patient and family-centered integrative oncology care. 

  • Training in a formal integrative medicine program is required and at least one year of experience in the use of integrative medicine therapies and selfcare in the oncology setting, including use of dietary supplements, mind-body medicine therapies, acupuncture, acupressure and other evidence based IM therapies as well as lifestyle practices that have been shown improved cancer outcomes.
  • A working knowledge of basic oncology principles and practice.
  • Excellent communication skills are necessary to ensure optimum patient care outcomes in a complex care environment.
  • Respectful and ethical in their interactions with staff, patients and their family and caretakers alike.
  • Skilled clinicians, providing evidence-based diagnosis and management of integrative medicine therapies related to the acute, symptomatic, and palliative care needs of patients with cancer.
  • An effective educator teaching and providing information about disease processes, treatments, and management of treatment toxicities to patients, their family and other caregivers from an integrative medicine perspective.
  • An effective educator of MD’s, APP’s ,RN’s, MA’s and all other supportive care professionals at SCCA in the basic principles and practice of supportive oncology care, palliative care and integrative medicine therapies and how they can add value to patient care. The APP in this role needs to teach and communicate an effective and practical way to incorporate integrative medicine approaches into the patient’s plan of care.

Scope of Work

  • Takes responsibility for keeping up with current concepts in the management of patients in their care from an integrative medicine perspective.
  • Performs complex and problem-focused H & Ps and assessments for patients.
  • Evaluates and manages on-treatment and post-treatment side effects, as well as long-term surveillance and survivorship issues. Offers treatment recommendations from an integrative medicine perspective.
  • Performs procedures according to licensure, credentialing, and scope of practice
  • Collaborates and consults with other disciplines and services to ensure safe, effective, and timely treatment as well as continuity of patient care. Care will be coordinated in a multidisciplinary fashion with collaborating services which may include surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, medical nutrition, social work, physical therapy, spiritual health psychology, pain service, hospice, and palliative care. 
  • Continuously works with medical and operations leadership to continue to build and enhance the Integrative Medicine service
  • Participates in the conduct of cancer clinical research, including patient, caregiver, and peer education.
  • Communicates changes in patient’s health status or urgent patient issues to the patient’s primary oncologist in a timely manner.
  • Participates in patient rounds, conferences and committees
  • Actively participates in the development and maintenance of patient management algorithms and standing orders.
  • Documents patient care data in accordance with the SCCA and UWP policies
  • ACLS certified
  • Performs assessments of patient’s and caregivers’ knowledge, attitudes, and actions around the cancer diagnosis and treatment issues within an integrative medicine framework. Evaluates the physical and psychological state of the cancer patient.
  • Provides psychological support to patients and their caregivers by participating in patient and/or family teaching, counseling and rehabilitation.
  • Refers patients to community agencies and other resources to promote optimal adjustment and functioning in coordination with other SCCA supportive care services.
  • Member of the Rapid Response team
  • Other duties as assigned


Required qualifications

  • Completion of a formal integrative medicine program such as:
    • Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine-Integrative Medicine Fellowship
    • Integrative Oncology Scholars Program
  • Licensure and credentialing:
    • Washington State Licensure as an ARNP or PA-C
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an ARNP or PA-C

Preferred qualifications

  • Training in mind-body medicine therapies
  • Training in medical acupuncture and/or auricular acupuncture
  • Training in acupressure
  • Experience in program development, educator mindset
  • Comfortable speaking publicly (peers and patients)
  • Experience as an Integrative Medicine Clinician
