The Clinical Research Center APP oversees the daily operations and research activities conducted within a dedicated clinical trials unit at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The research activities include, but is not limited to, administration of FDA-regulated investigational products to trial participants.


The APP is responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing the unit’s standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensuring all staff are trained and working according to SOPs and in accordance with all federal, state and local requirements. The Manager oversees and performs as needed, medical procedures that require Physician Assistant or other Midlevel clinical degree in medical practice. The APP works under the guidance of the Medical Director and reports directly to the Clinical Research Center Director of Operations. The APP supervises a Medical Assistant.


  • Maintain standard operation procedure guidelines for research clinic to include cleaning and maintenance of all equipment within facility, updates regarding costs for services provided, and hours of facility operation.
  • Serves on Oversight Committee and vets all new clinical research protocols and modifications to existing protocols for operational feasibility and resource needs.
  • Oversee conduct of trial measures, and performing more advanced clinic procedures within the Physician Assistant scope of practice and according to research protocols. This may include such procedures as determining medical fitness of study participants according to their research protocols, physical examinations, IV needle placement, IV administration and observation of infused investigational product, blood draw from peripheral sites, and proper documentation of and timing of research-related procedures in source files
  • Maintain current knowledge of and adherence to research protocols, standard operating procedures, and any protocol deviation documentation. May update concomitant medications and adverse events documentation in research files.
  • Creates trial implementation plan, summary of study procedures, and orders as needed for protocol activities occurring in the trial’s unit
  • Trains investigators and study staff performing activities within the unit of policies and procedures that support protocol compliance, and participant and staff safety; ensures appropriate licensure for activities to be performed
  • Maintain continuing education credits, ACLS certification and credentialing requirements, assuring the same for clinic staff, to perform in accord with Washington state Department of Health quality assurance and center requirements


  • Physician Assistant or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in medical practice with current Washington State license
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in clinical practice and FDA-regulated investigational products
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory environment surrounding clinical trials
  • Prior experience implementing multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and manage changing priorities with excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), customer service, collaboration, problem solving and interpersonal skills
