The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.

The Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Technician supports a comprehensive and integrated EH&S program at SCCA.The incumbent is responsible for assisting in compliance efforts by gathering quality data through inspections; hazardous waste management duties and additional responsibilities as assigned. The technician provides updated status of activities to program managers as needed. These efforts contribute to an efficient department to meet safe environment of care standards for patients, visitors, staff and affiliates that work in or enter any SCCA facility. The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, interested in gaining experience and learning about the healthcare environment of care. The candidate must be able to attend and complete the required trainings for responding to emergent events.


Under the supervision of and in coordination with program managers:

  • Assist with the collection, preparation and transportation of hazardous wastes for disposal and transportation of non-waste hazardous materials
  • Support industrial hygiene projects, construction safety and respiratory fit testing
  • Assist with fire and life safety compliance as needed
  • Investigate occupational accidents as needed
  • Support the chemical, radiation and biosafety laboratory audit programs as needed
  • Serve as a member of hazardous materials response team
  • Inputs information in hazardous chemical management database to maintain documentation of waste generated, chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets, verifying that data is accurately maintained
  • Perform other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, safety, chemistry, microbiology or closely related scientific field
  • Able to partner successfully with multidisciplinary teams from all areas of SCCA
  • Able to effectively listen to and acknowledge the needs and perspectives of stakeholders
  • Able to follow direction and provide feedback on current state findings
  • Communicates information on inspection findings, technical reports as needed.
  • Written professional correspondence to staff as needed
  • Adapting to emergent needs, constraints, and barriers
    Able to adjust work schedule (including some evenings and weekends) and location to accommodate emergent needs


  • One year of related experience preferred but not required, preferably in a healthcare setting
  • Experience supporting hazardous waste management programs
  • Must possess good writing, analytical, verbal communication and computer skills
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and required personal protective equipment. Must be capable of lifting 40 pounds
