    Responsible for the planning and administration of multiple systems and staff/instrument workstations in a scientific environment, including effective provisioning, installation/configuration, and maintenance of systems hardware, software and related network infrastructure. This individual is customer facing and functions as a systems and desktop support specialist for all Shared Resources core facilities and staff, to ensure end-users are able to operate at maximum efficiency. Also participates in technical research and development with Center IT, to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure and ensure all systems and related procedures adhere to organizational values.


    Work independently under general supervision to perform daily job duties.

    • Demonstrate comprehensive skill set in configuring and maintaining a variety of computer desktops, portable devices, server operating systems and applications, multiple Internet browsers and end-user software
    •  Understand system management tools and basic network infrastructure in order to provide the highest quality support for end-users
    • Install and support business and scientific instrumentation workstations, as well as the shared Library Computer Center devices and software, to ensure requirements for optimal performance, uptime and security for the entire life-cycle are met. Recommend appropriate hardware and software upgrades within context of a long range plan.  
    • Operate in an IT Help Desk mode to provide daily service to customers efficiently; handle phone calls and emails, work ticketing queues and effectively troubleshoot a wide range of customer issues and requests
    • Participate in assigned projects and assist project teams with technical strategy, analysis, design and implementation
    • Demonstrate strong customer service and communication skills, including the ability to verbally convey technical information to non-technical audiences in a clear and concise manner.
    • Maintain technical documentation and reference material for all core facilities in a comprehensive Knowledge Base, including system administrator tasks and inventory management
    • Comply with Center IT standards and security policies regarding the use and licensing of Center-provided hardware and software, and collaborate with all IT teams in the support of enterprise applications and processes


    • Minimum of 6 years of related experience
    • Computer science degree or equivalent experience supporting up to 200 users in a comparable systems environment
    • Solid knowledge of current Microsoft Server and workstation operating systems, Macintosh operating systems, and virtualization platforms
    • Experience with relational databases, system design and an understanding of integrated systems within a business network
    • Ability to lift and carry computer equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
