Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

The need for data science in cutting-edge biological research continues to increase at a rate exceeding the ability of many researchers to keep pace. To help meet these needs, fredhutch.io was established at Fred Hutch to facilitate education about and promote access to computational resources for researchers. The Hutch is hiring a Training and Outreach Specialist to work closely with the fredhutch.io Training Coordinator and the Hutch Bioinformatics and Data Science Cooperative (The Coop) to organize communities, help coordinate and promote Coop and fredhutch.io events, develop curricula, and help train and teach researchers. This is an opportunity for a motivated and interested individual to work closely with Hutch researchers, facilitating the advancement of basic and translational biomedical science. This role would be housed within the Hutch Data Commonwealth (HDC), a division with Fred Hutch that drives the development of data-intensive research capabilities and infrastructure across scientific divisions and disciplines through software and data engineering, training, and strategic partnering.

    Responsibilities

    • Community organization (25%): coordinating various data science communities at Hutch, including R and Python groups, code review groups, data visualization group, and others. Help develop norms and grow new communities. Drive group enthusiasm and interaction through social channels (e.g., Slack).
    • Learning/skills maintenance (25%): Stay informed on the latest tools and techniques being used by researchers at Hutch and contribute to plans for training. This includes consulting and coordinating with researchers to identify community needs, and/or attending scientific seminars to stay current.
    • Curriculum development (25%): Develop curricula for short courses (1-8 hours of content) for skills in reproducible data science. Assist the Training Coordinator in developing new materials for existing courses.
    • Event coordination (15%): lead the coordination, communication, and promotion of various Coop and fredhutch.io events. These include workshops, hackathons, courses, social hours, and seminars. Coordinate efforts with the Translational Data Science Integrated Research Center and HDC to ensure consistent, clear messaging.
    • Teaching (10%): Teach approximately 10 short courses per year for Hutch researchers. Mentor new instructors who may contribute to teaching fredhutch.io courses.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field; or significant experience in one of these areas. Masters preferred
    • Minimum of 3-5 years years relevant experience in community efforts, Bachelors degree or 1-3 years relevant experience in community efforts, Masters degree (e.g., training, community development, outreach, communication)
    • Highly desired: Certified Instructor for The Carpentries
    • Competency in data intensive skills, approaches, and languages like R and/or Python, SQL, machine learning, and version control
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Enthusiastic when communicating with researchers from a variety of training backgrounds, from wet lab researchers to computational methods developers
    • Committed to open source and open science principles
    • Understanding of researchers and the research culture
    • Excited about advancing research through community building
