The Silberstein lab (https://research.fhcrc.org/silberstein/en.html) is seeking to recruit a post-doctoral fellow who is interested in pursuing laboratory-based research project.
The main goal of the laboratory is to combine basic stem cell biology and clinically relevant murine models in order to develop new therapeutic approaches to promote HSC function in bone marrow failure and to enhance post-transplant hematopoietic reconstitution. We are particularly interested in using microenvironment-derived molecules as drugs or therapeutic targets, and discovered several novel niche factors using proximity-based single cell analysis (for details, please see Silberstein et al, Cell Stem Cell 2016, Goncalves, Silberstein et al, Cell 2016).
A successful candidate will be studying the effect of extrinsic HSC regulators on the bone marrow function and disease progression in preclinical models of myelodysplastic syndrome. In parallel, they will also be involved in a project which investigates the role of newly-defined niche factors in HSC aging and stress response.
They will be part of a Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Program at the Fred Hutch and interact closely with other laboratories within the Program (Kiem, Adair, Bernstein, Hadland, Doulatov) and those within Integrated Immunotherapy Research Center (Dudakov, Turtle). There will be ample opportunities for data presentation and informal discussions. They will be encouraged to develop research ideas and branch out into more independent projects. Mentorship and support for post-doctoral fellowship applications will be provided.
The candidate is expected to have a PhD and/or MD and a strong interest in stem cell research and commitment to basic/translational science in hematopoiesis. Applications from trainee hematologists who are willing to undertake a laboratory-based research project are welcome. Previous experience of working with murine models is not essential, but would be preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
