    The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.


    As the Clinical Pathways Abstraction Lead, you will split your time between functioning as a case abstractor and a subject matter expert, assisting the Clinical Pathways team in the generation of pathway content and pathway reports that are based on well-defined elements, accessible in the medical record.


    The ideal candidate for this role is an experienced Cancer Tumor Registrar, Medical Record Abstractor, or Health Information Management specialist who will be able to apply their knowledge of data collection and familiarity with medical records to support SCCA’s Clinical Pathways team in the production of organizational reports on adherence to medical practice standards.


    • Abstract patient-level data from the electronic medical record, up to 20 hours weekly
    • Develop and maintain abstraction standard operating procedures including an Clinical Pathways Data Dictionary
    • Work with providers across all service lines to ensure decision-point data elements are well-defined will produce quality reporting in both the initial design and maintenance phases of content development
    • Assist Clinical Pathway Associates with the building of Pathways-based reports and pathway reporting rules
    • Conduct quality assurance review of abstracted cases and participate in validation exercises
    • Indirect supervision of SCCA-staff members from other departments who also function as Clinical Pathway Abstractors. This includes training Abstractors to standard definitions and procedures as well as distributing of abstraction duties to meet reporting milestones.
    • Identify opportunities to continuously improve Clinical Pathways abstraction efforts
    • Prioritize duties into department and organizational goals


    Minimum qualifications:

    • 3+ years of experience working in electronic health records / clinical information systems
    • Ability to identify elements of a medical record's structure and content
    • Good understanding of AJCC 8th edition, Site and histology codes
    • Experienced in technical writing and process documentation
    • High attention to detail in all efforts
    • Desire to work in a team environment and engage with others to solve problems
    • Intermediate to Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel and Access
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated track record of building effective, collegial relationships with clinical providers and staff
    • Excellent time management, task prioritization, and organizational skills

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Certification as a Tumor Registrar, in a Health Information Management specialty, or other related field
    • Experience working in an academic medical center, preferably in the Oncology setting
