    Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is looking for a hands-on, brand and user-savvy Director of Design/Interactives to join our Design & User Experience (UX) team within Communications & Marketing. This team supports the mission of Fred Hutch and engages diverse audiences through smart and purposeful design that drive organizational goals. Your work should not only reflect that ideal but raise the bar to create extraordinary visuals, videos and branded campaigns.

     

    In this senior role, you will lead a team of designers and multimedia producers to craft immersive online experiences, create new digital/print products, shape brand expressions and campaigns and develop innovative ways to drive engagement across a wide range of audiences, including scientific peers, patients and families, philanthropic donors, industry and health care delivery partners, and policymakers. 

     

    As a visual storyteller and brand ambassador, you will conceptualize and build insightful data visualizations, pitch interactive features and parlay your technical expertise to bring projects to life across departments, platforms and channels. You must possess a clean, yet distinctive design sensibility, a focus on user behavior and a knack for creating operational efficiencies to manage the steady volume of weekly project requests.

     

    In this fast-moving, agency-like setting, you will be working alongside a talented and dedicated team of web producers and developers, writers, media relations and social media managers, and marketers, as well as partnering with other managers across the organization. You will help shape, evolve and execute brand guidelines and creative strategy, analyze needs, problem-solve across the design process, and roll up your sleeves to get the job done. You will help apply and maintain the center’s visual standards across all mediums (website, email, video, social, print).

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

    • Build, lead and manage an in-house design team with broad skillsets.
    • Create powerful creative concepts and interactives that support strategic goals.
    • Work closely with UX, Marketing, Philanthropy, Recruiting and Business Development teams to define, plan, prioritize and execute on a variety of design projects.
    • Develop creative campaigns for integrated marketing initiatives; provide creative direction and brand guidance to external agencies
    • Drive creative brainstorm sessions to support new initiatives and overall user experience.
    • Develop creative strategies and manage a range of deliverables, including print, digital and environmental executions (fundraising materials, branded business collateral, PowerPoint presentations, informational graphics, conference display booths, online interactives, explainer videos, online giving, etc.).
    • Manage project pipeline and ensure that all creative assets are on brand, on time and on budget.
    • Evolve brand style guide and visual identity. Be a brand gatekeeper, ensuring that all creative adheres to the guidelines.
    • Seek out, evaluate and manage vendors/agencies/freelancers to quickly scale design services when necessary.

    Qualifications

    Experience

    • 10+ years mentoring/managing creative teams
    • 7+ years as a creative in non-profit, agency or e-commerce space
    • 7+ years working with Adobe Creative Suite (including After Effects) as well as solid use of Sketch, Zeplin,
    • InVision and Asana or similar; 3-5 years working with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
    • Online portfolio demonstrating visual design (print/web), video/multimedia/interactives, branding and UX solutions created

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

    • Creative leadership and experience inspiring and managing a team
    • Experience with brand/co-brand development, extension and expression
    • Deep background in storytelling across multimedia and campaigns, as well as classic design knowledge (use of typography, color, paper, printing techniques) and execution
    • At ease working in an iterative environment, partnering with others and synthesizing feedback
    • Expert eye for photo/video editing, storyboarding
    • Illustration, motion graphics, animation and 3D rendering knowledge a plus
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
    • Ability to assess priorities and work well under pressure with short deadlines
    • Naturally curious, supportive and empathetic
    • Excellent ability to conceptualize, communicate and inspire
