    About Us: The Fred Hutchinson (Fred Hutch)/University of Washington (UW) Cancer Consortium (Consortium) is a research collaboration comprising Fred Hutch and its strong collaborators, the UW, Seattle Children's, and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The Consortium is recognized as a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center through its dedication to developing research programs, faculty, and facilities that will lead to better approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.


    Job Summary: The work of the Community Health Educator (CHE), housed by the Consortium’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, includes direct involvement in community-based partnerships, research, and practice to address the cancer burden in our catchment area. The CHE will serve as a critical link between Consortium staff and African-American populations. The CHE will use appropriate strategies, and methods to facilitate health promotion and disease prevention. The CHE must have a thorough understanding and experience working African-American communities in our catchment area. The CHE will support and advance the community outreach and engagement work of the Consortium to help create communities where the residents of our catchment area suffer less from cancer and related diseases.


    The CHE will support Consortium work that addresses the cancer burden in our catchment area. This includes work to address cancer health disparities that disproportionately affect the African-American/Black community. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

    • Developing, facilitating, and maintaining academic and community partnerships.
    • Collaborating with academic, research, community and regional partners to implement cancer control strategies.
    • Advising and assisting in message development and content for culturally appropriate study brochures, curricula and educational materials.
    • Disseminating relevant cancer-related messages, materials, programs and research opportunities.
    • Assist in the recruitment and retention of underrepresented populations in Consortium research.
    • Staffing booths/exhibits at events to provide information and recruit participants for studies.
    • Conducting community-based education and outreach on cancer-related topics.
    • Participating in regular staff meetings.


    • Bachelor’s degree with major study in public health, community health education, or closely allied field, OR Associate’s degree with and at least two years of professional experience in a public health, disease prevention, and/or health promotion
    • Demonstrated experience with community engagement
    • Understanding and proven ability to work with communities experiencing health inequity. Must be culturally aware and sensitive to diverse populations in the Consortium’s catchment area
    • Knowledge and demonstrated experience working with African-American and African communities. Knowledgeable about community history, values, and culture
    • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds
    • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in both verbal and written form
    • Ability to communicate information in a culturally appropriate, respectful manner to a variety of audiences
    • Experience conducting trainings and/or making group presentations
    • Proven ability to work independently, and in a collaborative team environment
    • Knowledge with principles and methods of health education/promotion, program planning and evaluation
    • Experience in planning, developing and implementing public health interventions (i.e. public awareness/social marketing campaigns)
    • Demonstrated experience working in collaborative public health initiatives involving multiple stakeholders
    • Demonstrated high level of service delivery to internal and external partners
    • Fluency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.)
    • Car and valid Washington State Driver’s License required
