    With general supervision, the Software Development Engineer IV role is to provide expert technical leadership to develop and implement software solutions in support the mission of Fred Hutch.

     

    Reporting: The Software Development Engineer IV reports to the Software Development Engineer Manager or Director.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide expert technical leadership and direction to multi-disciplinary teams to move toward IT Industry best practices in software development and system design
    • Proven track record of delivering on multiple complex projects through all stages of the development lifecycle; design through deployment
    • Front-end development in Javascript frameworks, such as React or Angular
    • Understand the business needs of the customers and proactively identify solutions to support the strategic direction of the project
    • Work in an Agile environment that is moving toward DevOps
    • Develop software features, enhancements and customizations in a variety of distributed and managed systems
    • Create and maintain documentation repository to include operational documents, architectural schematics and detailed technical specifications
    • Provide Tier 2 Support of software and act as an escalation point for technical issues as required
    • Participate and lead code and design reviews
    • Create application architecture for all level of projects (small, medium, large)
    • Design and deliver formal and informal presentations on a variety of technical topics to a variety of audiences
    • Contribute, follow and maintain knowledge of current software development trends, best practices, industry tools and standards
    • Maintain knowledge and follow department specific project management methodologies
    • Cross team and organizational collaboration
    • May require on-call support

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • BS in Computer Science, Engineering or related field desired or equivalent professional experience
    • Minimum of 7 years professional software development experience; 10 years or more preferred Programming in Java, or equivalent
    • Ability to code with or without modern IDE
    • Sharp analytical abilities, proven design skills and problem solving skills
    • Strong technical reading, writing, and verbal communication skills including the ability to work with industry-specific jargon; ability to communicate effectively from individual contributors to project sponsors
    • Strong understanding and proven leadership in Agile/Scrum and DevOps methodology
    • Solid understanding of Object Oriented Programming concepts, data structures and algorithms
    • Demonstrated leadership abilities in an engineering environment in driving operational excellence and best practices
    • Experience integrating with remote APIs and the challenges inherent to distributed systems
    • Automated testing of JavaScript front-end applications
    • Proven track record coaching and mentoring team members
    • Strong concept of User Experience (UX) and complex business workflows preferred
    • UI Development experience using JavaScript or other client side scripting is a plus
    • Enjoys working in a team environment and has a proven record of positive contributions to the work of the team
    • Knowledge of relational databases
    • Experience with medical and medical research administration, such as IRBs, Grants Management Systems, Huron Research Administration suite preferred
