    The Associate Director role is an integral part of the clinical laboratory leadership team. This position is expected to bridge clinical laboratory operations, scientific direction and administration, provide continuous connection between individual laboratories, ensure quality and regulatory issues are addressed, and advocate for improvement projects. It is imperative that this position works in a collaborative relationship with SCCA leadership toward a shared mission and vision. Additionally, the Associate Director will interface regularly with the University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital regarding laboratory and related issues.


    The nature of this work is challenging and the position requires individual initiative and decision-making capabilities to carry out the required tasks. The work requires mature judgment for the development of appropriate techniques and in recognizing circumstances requiring special attention. Flexibility in scheduling is required. Interaction with other departments and laboratories in the SCCA and FHCRC is inherent to the position. The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    • Oversee operations of the clinical laboratories, clinical laboratory administration, and Transfusion Services Office, including the management of objectives and budgets
    • Ensure effective communication between the laboratories and administrative leadership; provide laboratory representation to multiple forums across the SCCA and our partner organizations
    • Facilitate communication and collaboration between laboratories to share ideas and resources; provide SCCA context and overall laboratory perspective to ensure consistency and equity across individuals departments
    • Foster a culture of continuous performance improvement, modeling use of lean processing tools and strategies; provide leadership and support to move laboratory initiatives forward; ensure laboratory interests are well represented in cross-departmental projects
    • Mentor laboratory managers and provide opportunities for leadership development. Ensure staff training, development and orientation. Responsible for personnel issues, including hiring, continuing education and disciplinary actions
    • Work in collaboration with the Clinical Laboratory Medical Director and QA Manager to provide cross-departmental oversight and guidance for quality, safety and compliance with applicable standards, laws and regulatory mandates related to clinical laboratories.
    • Support implementation of new technologies and instrumentation, including laboratory information management systems
    • Facilitate operational decision and efficient utilization of resources to provide timely and accurate testing services
    • Assure financial performance and evaluate capital expenditures
    • Coordinate inter-institutional projects with other clinical laboratories at UWMC, UW Laboratory Medicine, Seattle Children’s Hospital and FHCRC
    • Facilitate contract management and transfer price agreements for laboratory services
    • Establish monitoring mechanisms to ensure employees adhere to the Integrity at Work Statement of Ethics and Business Conduct as well as SCCA and departmental policies and procedures
    • Serve as an effective contact person/liaison for the department



    • Four-year college degree is required
    • Masters degree in biological science, epidemiology, public health, business or equivalent is highly desirable



    • Five or more years of progressively responsible management experience in the health care/laboratory field
    • Experience with CLIA regulations as they are represented in the CAP and ASHI standards for laboratory accreditation
    • Experience with Washington State Medical Test Site regulations and applicable Joint Commission standards
