    The Executive Director, Planned Giving serves as part of an integrated Individual Giving Program and reports to the Chief Philanthropy Executive, Individual Giving. This position will oversee the planned giving program providing leadership and direction to the planned giving team. Planned giving is a significant component of a comprehensive development program at Fred Hutch. This is a key role in ensuring the institution meets its comprehensive fundraising goals by leading a highly productive planned giving program that engages supporters to give to Fred Hutch through estate planning and complex gifts.

     

    The Executive Director, Planned Giving is responsible for planning, directing and soliciting both planned and major gifts. The position will manage a personal portfolio of individuals and will be called upon to engage and collaborate with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center leadership staff, faculty and volunteers as required. This position will have management responsibility and be the source of education for staff on issues related to planned giving so that team members have current understanding for identifying donor traits that make a planned gift a viable option. Some travel, weekend and evening work is required.

    Responsibilities

    Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

    • Responsible for the administrative and supervisory functions of the planned giving program
    • Work closely with legal and financial professionals in designing and executing planned giving instruments
    • Proactive solicitation of prospects for planned gifts. Prepare proposals for planned gift prospects
    • Actively manage a portfolio of prospects capable of making gifts of $1million+, working closely with faculty and staff, to create compelling strategies for complex gifts
    • Responsible for the development, management and solicitation of a portfolio of 50-75 planned and major giving prospects and annual donors who are in various stages of identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship through a moves management system, and administer open estates through distribution and closing
    • Build relationships with allied professionals; Assist in recruiting members for the Planned Giving Advisory Committee and attend quarterly meetings as requested
    • Be conversant in the scientific research undertaken at Fred Hutch, and its importance in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases
    • Develop and implement a marketing and stewardship plan to create a stream of planned giving prospects through activities such as targeted mailings, seminars, referrals, and electronic communications
    • Understand the various instruments of fundraising and collaborate with other philanthropy staff to maximize philanthropic funding for scientific research

     

    Qualifications

    Summary of Experience

    • Bachelor's degree required; Masters degree preferred
    • Successful experience in leading a team; managing and evaluating personnel; experience managing budgets
    • Seven + years experience as a frontline fundraiser with planned giving experience required
    • Proven track record of successful planned gift solicitation required
    • Knowledge of tax law and charitable implications
    • Experience in campaign planning and/or campaign implementation desired

     

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Superior communication skills and the capacity to grasp medical and scientific concepts
    • Ability to synthesize and translate scientific information into an articulate and compelling case for support
    • Demonstrated skill as an effective communicator with both internal and external constituents
    • Integrity and discretion; mature judgment in handling sensitive and confidential information
    • Ability to organize and establish objectives and priorities in a fast-paced, complex organizational environment
    • Proven track record of increasing revenue and expanding constituencies
    • Significant experience in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of planned gifts
    • Ability to think strategically; Self motivation and flexibility
    • Strong interpersonal skills to work with diverse groups of constituents
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and The Raiser’s Edge
