    In coordination with the overall efforts of the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Department, the Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) works as a member of a team that manages a comprehensive program to provide occupational health services to Fred Hutch and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) staff members in support of research and patient care activities.

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES
    Responsibilities include: initial treatment and triage of work-related injuries and accidents; investigation and root-cause analysis of work-related accident/illness and near-miss reports; management of WA State Department of Labor and Industries workers compensation claims ; review of medical screening forms for laboratory animal users and respirator users; post-exposure evaluation and treatment of incidents involving etiologic agents, chemicals, and bloodborne pathogens; ergonomic evaluations of staff workstations and work processes; administration of immunizations for healthcare workers and laboratory staff; Health and Safety Committee support; review and development of policies and procedures that ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and mandates.

    The Occupational Health Nurse follows Fred Hutch, SCCA and departmental policies and procedures in the development and implementation of programs. This position reports to and works in collaboration with the Occupational Health Program Manager.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist with the Worker’s Compensation Program including: case management of Fred Hutch/SCCA claims and administering the Return to Work program; review quarterly and monthly
    • Retrospective Rating Program reports, arrange Retro Meetings, receive/deliver Retro checks and collaborate with Fred Hutch/SCCA Finance Liaisons to determine annual enrollment choices; training and coaching employees, Supervisors and Management about L&I policies and procedures; liaise with Human Resources for various leave programs; work with Payroll around Keep On Salary Program.
    • Collaborate with EH&S colleagues to investigate work-related accidents and injuries, perform root cause analyses, identify trends, and develop and track implementation measures to prevent future incidents.
    • Develop, manage and refine logging and tracking of worker’s compensation claims within an occupational health database.
    • Receive and track accident and illness reports and near miss reports; assist managers in conducting follow-up investigations as needed.
    • Sit as a designated member and provide routine and requested reports to the FredHutch/SCCA Health & Safety Committees and various subcommittees (e.g. SCCA Sharps Committee, SCCA Lift Committee, SCCA Lab Quality Improvement/Integrity Committee).
    • Maintain the Fred Hutch and SCCA OSHA 300 Logs and ensure timely posting by the required deadline.
    • Gather data and conduct the annual survey of occupational injuries and illnesses; submit data online to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. .
    • Perform individual and group ergonomic workstation evaluations; write evaluation and recommendation reports for provision to staff and managers; enter reports into the occupational health database; develop ergonomic training for staff and managers; query database for ergonomic data and trends; export reports and manipulate data for dashboard statistics.
    • Provide staff immunizations and TB screening (healthcare workers, research staff, and volunteers) including placement of TB skin tests and MMR/Tdap/Varicella/Influenza vaccines; participate in quarterly volunteer evening orientations from 530-630pm.
    • Review medical respirator questionnaires and animal use medical screening forms; review and enter audiometric test reports into occupational health database.
    • Conduct exposure incident response, treatment, and evaluation (Bloodborne Pathogens, Cercopithecine herpesvirus (CHV-1), and various etiologic agents used in research facility).
    • Coordinate access to and monitor use of mothers rooms on South Lake Union Campus
    • Write, review, and provide input into occupational health program policy and procedure development; participate in continuous process improvement measures and project management activities as needed.
    • Provide first aid and triage care to Fred Hutch/SCCA staff members who have been injured or developed illness related to their work. Use discretion in providing non-work related routine care where health maintenance will allow an employee to remain at the worksite (e.g, dressing changes, suture removal, BP checks, etc.).
    • Optimize the use of EH&S Occupational Health Nursing services through communication with employees.
    • Provide other services as requested.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Five years of experience as a professional nurse.
    • Licensed RN in the State of Washington.
    • BLS certification.
    • Associate's Degree in Nursing, Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
    • Effective written and oral communication skills


    Desired Qualifications:

    • Master’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or other related fields
    • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or Certified Occupational Health Nurse - Specialist (COHN-S) certification from the American Board of Occupational Health Nursing (ABOHN)
    • Experience in public speaking and training for group programs


    Additional Requirements:

    • Team player and willingness to cover other OHN duties during vacations, educational/professional conferences, and sick-calls
    • Ability to multi-task and be flexible in daily schedule to accommodate unannounced staff drop-in visits
    • Proficiency in administering MMR/Tdap/Varicella/Influenza vaccines and placement of TB tests
    • Ability to work independently and utilize available resources and/or networking skills to research unfamiliar issues
    • Ability to ascertain when to request guidance from EH&S colleagues and manager as needed
    • Excellent observational skills, interpersonal skills, and verbal/written communication skills in working with health care professionals, administrators, employees, researchers, EH&S colleagues, SCCA liaisons, and regulatory agencies
    • Excellent computer application skills utilizing MS Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • Ability to learn and become familiar with other computer applications such as Mindscape, occupational health manager database, Sharepoint, and Adobe Experience Manager
    • Knowledge and competence in applying accepted ergonomic principles when conducting workstation evaluations
    • Ability to develop and maintain collegial and cooperative relationships with members of the EH&S Department, SCCA Liaisons, and Occupational Health Program team
    • Knowledge of federal, state and local requirements that govern occupational health and safety
    • Knowledge of Washington State Department of Labor and Industries Workers Compensation claims management and related processes
