Lab Manager (Research Technician II, III, or IV)

The Bloom lab in the Division of Basic Sciences and Computational Biology program is recruiting for a lab manager to perform research and assist with the day-to-day operations of the lab. This fulltime position is ideal for a scientist who enjoys interacting with others, and is interested in being involved in a wide variety of projects in an interdisciplinary lab. We are looking for applicants who are interested in long-term career growth and development in the Bloom lab, rather than applicants who want a short-term position prior to applying to medical or graduate school.

The Bloom lab researches the evolution of viruses, and so we are especially interested in applicants with some background in virology, immunology, evolution, or computational biology—however, experience in these areas is not required if an applicant demonstrates an interest and propensity in learning new areas. We are searching for applicants who will make a long-term commitment to the lab, so in return we are happy to make a long-term commitment in training in new techniques.

    Responsibilities

This position is expected to involve about one-third time spent on general lab management responsibilities, and the remaining two-thirds time spent on scientific research. Depending on experience level and interest, the research could take the form of collaborative work with a graduate student or postdoc, or of an independent project. The lab manager will be expected to attend all lab meetings and other scientific events, and contribute to or lead the work for scientific publications.

    Qualifications

A Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD in a related field and prior laboratory experience are required. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is acceptable. In addition, good verbal and written communication and routine computer skills are necessary. Participation in lab meetings and presentation of data will be required. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills in recordkeeping, multitasking, prioritizing responsibilities, time management, and an ability to interact with all levels of staff. As indicated by the posting of this position at multiple levels (research technician II, III, or IV), we will consider applicants with a broad range of experience levels and prior training.
