    Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (“Fred Hutch”) is one of the premier cancer research centers in the world and home to three Nobel laureates. Fred Hutch is an independent, nonprofit research institution, located on a magnificent campus in the South Lake Union area of Seattle. With the mission of eliminating cancer and related diseases as causes of human suffering and death, the Center conducts research of the highest standards to improve prevention and treatment of cancer and related diseases. Recognized internationally for its pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation, the Fred Hutch’s five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for conducting basic and applied science.

    In order to fulfill its mission, Fred Hutch is dedicated to:

    The scientific palette of Fred Hutch is extensive; it has over 270 research scientists and 2,830 employees. Areas of research focus include hematologic malignancies, solid tumor biology, immunotherapy, early detection, tumor research, international research, fundamental science, cancer and prevention research as well as substantial programs in global oncology and HIV/AIDS. Additionally, given that the eradication of cancer and other life-threatening diseases is an ambitious goal that demands tenacity, scientific excellence, collaboration and breakthrough creativity, Fred Hutch has five scientific divisions working toward this end: Basic Sciences, Clinical Research, Human Biology, Public Health Sciences, and Vaccine and Infectious Disease. The Center has recently established cross-cutting integrated research centers organized to promote team science involving members from two or more of the scientific divisions.


    The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, also located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education. The Director Total Rewards would also support the 1,600 SCCA employees.


    REPORTS TO: Senior Director, HR Solutions and Total Rewards


    The Director Total Rewards will create and lead Human Resources practices and objectives that will support a culture that supports Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (“Fred Hutch”) and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance’s (“SCCA”) Vision and Mission. Provides management/consultative services, develops, implements, coordinates, policies and programs in the areas of Total Rewards. With employees in Africa, SCCA acquisitions and growth and Fred Hutch, the Director Total Rewards would be responsible for supporting an employee base of approximately 5,000.


    • Bring thought leadership and drive organization’s compensation and total rewards philosophy, strategy and practices; ensure alignment with business growth goals and priorities
    • Lead the team’s effort in the design, development, implementation and communication of innovative Totals Rewards programs, solutions and policies that ensure the organization is able to attract and retain the best talent in the industry
    • Lead the compensation and benefits team, and partner closely with leaders on both day to day operations as well as strategic and Board level decisions
    • Provide benefits expertise and guidance in the evaluation and selection of suppliers, consultants, and partners, and be able to lead the negotiation of fee structures and contracts
    • Drive analytical rigor and deep analysis on effectiveness and competitiveness of existing programs; establish and drive key metrics including usage, engagement, and cost analyses
    • Ensure operational effectiveness in order to scale the team’s impact; build internal processes and systems to support what the company needs today and in the future
    • Partner closely with multiple internal teams within Fred Hutch to ensure optimal outcomes for employees, external vendors and partners to leverage automation and resources, etc.
    • Anticipate, innovate and respond quickly as business and market realities change, staying current on best practices and trends; ensure compliance with applicable legislation
    • Excel in change management and ensure strong communication of total rewards philosophy and practices with employees at all levels
    • Keeps apprised of federal, state and local compensation laws and regulations to ensure organizational compliance
    • Understands and has proven success in translating new programs into outcomes


    • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Finance or related field or 4+ years equivalent experience
    • 10+ years’ experience in total rewards, compensation and benefits, compensation consulting, human resources management or an equivalent field
    • 7+ years’ experience leading teams
    • Proven experience creating and managing innovative, compelling compensation and total rewards programs in a fast-paced environment; skilled at interpreting business needs and making decisions based on emerging priorities as part of a large scale transformation
    • Experience benchmarking general and niche salary market data
    • A data-driven approach, strong communication and influencing skills, and the ability to balance multiple priorities under tight deadlines within a dynamic matrixed environment.
    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data and trends into key insights and recommendations; financial prowess and ability to build and manage budgets, build predictive and projective models, full understanding of equity practices, accounting and taxation, etc.
    • Proven ability to track, prioritize and drive to success multiple concurrent projects; demonstrated expertise as an executor, with strong operational background and subject matter expert
    • Experience in M&A due diligence and integration
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence across multiple levels of the organization on key compensation and benefits topics; excel at openness and flexibility with internal clients, balanced with maintaining consistency in total rewards philosophies and practices
    • Extensive experience developing individuals and teams
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication skills
    • Highest level of integrity and management of confidential information
    • Experience working at the board level
    • Executive compensation design and experience partnering with external consultants


    In addition, the ideal candidate will possess:

    • Master’s degree in a relevant field of study
    • Knowledge of relevant labor and employment law within Washington
    • Experience in healthcare, academic/faculty research institute environment
    • CCP or CEBS
    • Research and/or grant funding experience
    • Global benefits exposure
    • Strong professional network
    • Experience with ERP and Lean practices would be beneficial
