Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

You are invited to apply for a position at the quantitative biology group (http://research.fhcrc.org/shou/) in the division of basic sciences at FHCRC. We are interested in using experimental biology to quantitatively examine “cooperation,” because cooperation can be found virtually everywhere: between different cell types (e.g. our body), different individuals (e.g. ant colonies), or different species (e.g. flower-pollinator symbiosis). How can cooperation survive the invasion of cheaters that take but not give? How does cooperation evolve? We plan to study cooperation initially using an engineered system in which two complementary types of yeast cells can only survive when both types are present.

    Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform a project related to evolution.  The incumbent will also be responsible for making common reagents for the lab and participating in daily activities and duties of the lab.  Finally, the incumbent will aid in the completion of other ongoing projects in the lab as needed.  The incumbent will have opportunities to present substantial research results at conferences and gain authorship in research articles.

This position is Regular Research Technician position for one year, with the potential to transition into a longer-term position, depending on the Principal Investigator's funding support.

    Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree is required and at least two years of laboratory experience. Strong quantitative skills including basic (high school) mathematics knowledge are required as is the ability to learn new things and to be highly organized. Comfort with computer programming and the ability to quantitatively analyze datasets independently is a big plus.

Applicants must submit a cover letter (stating why you are interested in the position and your educational/career goals), resume, at least one reference letter from your primary research adviser and the contact information for two other professional references.
